Diving: Cheating or Street Smarts?

We don't have this problem in South Africa. Most of the lads that ply their trade in the local league are from townships & street cred is everything!!! Diving is seen as something that's done by soft lads, foreign players & ''cheese boys''.

South American players on the other hand see ''the dark arts of the game'' in a positive light. They see it as getting one over your opponent & being street smart. I think Maradonna said something about it in an interview a couple of years ago when Gary Lienecker accused him of being a cheat who robbed England of playing in the World Cup Final. He simply said that I agree. But sometimes, European sports writers & fans can get too sanctimonious for my liking. As much as I agree that diving should be stamped out the game.

What's your view as far as diving is concerned? Do see it as being street smart & getting one over your opponent? Do see it as cheating? Or do you see that's done by people who don't care about street cred & other such things?

Can it not be both?

If you get away with it, then yes. But if you pull a Neymar, then no. I just hate the self-rightous, sanctimonious a-holes who demonize players who pull a fast one on daft ref. I say blame the ref for not doing his job. Look at this way: If were a starving homeless man & I walked into a supermarket, stole a loaf of bread & got away with it, who is to blame? Me or the security personnel?

Both

depends if there is a touch then over egging it could be considered street smart.

if there is no touch then thats cheating.

getting a ball to the shins and holding your face ala rivaldo is untish

I suppose it can be both.

A blatant dive in the box or in the middle of the pitch looks like clear cheating. However, hurdling over a player doing a slide tackle is not a dive in a cheating sense.

However, is it cheating if someone goes down after minimal contact to buy a free kick when they are in a tight spot from the throw in line for example (this stuff winds me up and refs shouldn't buy into this)? I guess that is being street smart.

England won the '66 after scoring a dubious goal. They then winged after Lampards goal during the 2010 WC was disallowed. The media accused Neuer of being a cheat. I disagree. He was street smart. He quickly scooped the ball out the net & acted as if it didn't cross the line. I can bet my last dime that if Linecker (instead of Maradonna) scored the hand of God goal, the British media would've hailed him a hero, not a cheat. Hypocrite bunch is the media.

WTF^^^ Who is this guy.

Hurst's goal is still not decided. Lampard's goal was about 5 foot over the line.

What are you on about?

The point is, Neuer was labelled a cheat. I think he was street smart. He acted as if the ball never crossed the line & was quick to release it. I guess the gist of my post: what's the difference between cheating & being street smart? Is there a difference? Is there a line & how thin/thick is it?

Neuer was labelled a cheat.

-------------------------

Was he? Was Roy Carroll labelled a cheat when he pushed the ball out of the goal when Pedro Mendes had his one disallowed?

It's cheating. Furthermore it's embarrassing watching a grown man roll about the pitch. The same people who condone it then get on the refs back if they think he calls it wrongly.

Cheating, ban for life.

Same as shirt pulling

If England reached the WC final in 2022 & Kane took a dive that resulted in a penalty that eventually turned out to be the game winner, would you celebrate the victory? Would you attend the parade or just sulk at home & be ashamed to be associated with the English national team? Which one is it?

Really, got any quotes?

And what does that have to do about diving?

Really? A quick google search would settle this. But anyway, I see that some members of this site are afraid of being challenged intellectually. We might all be United fans but it is not healthy to turn this board into an echo chamber. There's room for contrarian views such as those that I hold. No need for the name calling when your views are challenged. Just saying.

Done a quick google search. No media outlets calling him a cheat. Just an article where neuer admits to conning the ref.

He turned up a few hours after the NOT606 guys all talked about infesting this site. It's very obvious.

I welcome new blood, this place is becoming a little dull as so many have left.

And cheating is cheating. You might win doing it, but the win will be tarnished forever as a result - some people don't care about that sort of thing, those people are shallow s. F-ck 'em.

And it's spelt Maradona, ffs. He's really quite famous you know.

you've made an article. Got an answer, disagreed with the answers given and then gone of on a tangent about neuer which was not even true.

Cheating, nothing to discuss.

It certainly isn't an echo chamber here. For one I never agree with that idiot Nicks PATHETIC comments...

But yes, you can't make a claim like 'Neuer called a cheat' when it is a lie - and then say we disagree cos this place is an echo chamber.
