Everyone should regularly check this site https://haveibeenpwned.com/

You should never re-use passwords across sites. If you are going to do that, then Inserting say the third and fourth letters of the site into the password, at a specific point will protect you massively

Use two factor authentication on paypal and twitter.

Use a credit card for online purchases, you can set up to pay the balance by DD each month.

Don't use Tor. Dont use free VPN services even the ones provided by your anti virus.

If you are selling something on gumtree, use a cheap pay as you go simcard and cheap mobile. Don't use your actual mobile number.

Used to get invited to cyber security conferences. I'm pretty well clued on such stuff.

As an aside, at the very least if you are using a vpn, dont use a five eyes service https://www.my-private-network.co.uk/vpn-provider-14-eyes-country-something-know/

Also perform a DNS leak test https://www.dnsleaktest.com/

Also consider who is operating your DNS service. For example Carphone Warehouse, Virgin etc

Audit every single app on your phone and look at what permissions they have. This is the next big scandal. that will unravel in the near future.... In particular permissions to read and modify SD card contents or access address book.

There's no escaping it imo...unless you go back to the dark ages.

Also the only way for Governments to get control over the internet is to make it out to be a place where it isn't safe for anyone at any time.

Create the problem. Sell the solution.

No not really. But any Chinese apps asking for permission are worthy of suspicion.

Again mobile devices from grey marketing sellers on eBay, gearbest etc can be loaded with spyware. Ideally you want to completely re image device with rom image from manufacturer.

If you ever see an online advert on the same page as a login prompt. Don't use that site as more often than not ads can read and modify page content.

Also be wary of sites that want you to give your location and publicise it via Geo-checkin
