Sports Awards...what a load of BS

Sportsmen win or lose on the pitch/ring/field etc.

Why the HELL then do we have sports awards?

I mean, I get why we have music or film awards. A talent-less clown like Justin Beeber (sp) might sell millions of records, have millions of views on youtube, have millions of fans across the globe & be the most popular musician on earth. That doesn't mean he is the BEST musician in his genre. All it means is that he has a very brilliant PR team behind him.

Music awards exist to give talented musicians who do not have the same profile that so called ''A-list'' stars have recognition. Such awards are meant to acknowledge the talent of artists that may not necessarily have a huge following, but are talented.

Back to the topic at hand. Why do we have sports awards? I just don't get it.

Hear me out. Sports; unlike art, is NOT subjective. There clear winners & losers. At the end of the season/tournament, we have stats that inform us on who the top goal scorer is, the keeper with the most clean sheets is, the team that finished on top of the log is etc.

There is NOTHING subjective about this. These are all facts that can be backed up by evidence. Why the hell then do we have mickey mouse award shows like the Ballon D'o, PFA Awards, Fifa World Player of the Year etc?

Is it time that we, the fans, demand that these awards get done away with?

I believe that these ''awards'' are nothing more than just a platform that is used to give sponsors & advertisers some exposure & to give the organizers (i.e FA, UEFA, FIFA etc) a couple of bobs or two.

It has nothing to do with rewarding players or teams for their efforts. I, for one, have taken upon myself to boycott such award shows & I hope many will follow suit.

West Ham get a mention now and again, but yeah no washing machine, everyone works down the same road, and any outsider who works in the city or even just wears a suit, is a low life!

1) I wouldn't attend even if they invited me.

2) Me not watching is a form of protest.

High audience/viewer ratings = high ad revenue.

I refuse to contribute to them making money. I am a man of principle. That's how me dad raised me up to be.

What aspect of why we have sports awards are you struggling to comprehend?

There is no way to objectively determine between the performances of sportspeople, certainly in team-based sports, and unquestionably across different sports.

And the awards and respective ceremonies under discussion often (rightly) recognize not only the elite performers and performances, but also individuals and groups competing at lower levels or who have overcome adversity to achieve beyond possible expectations.

I like them for their recognition of the worthy (not just the award winners) and their celebration and review of sporting achievement.

1) When Hussein Bolt wins a 100m race, he gets a Gold medal, a bouquet of flowers & a round of applause from the attendees.

Why the hell should he get ANOTHER award when he has already been rewarded for his efforts.

2) Sports - unlike art - is NOT subjective. There are clear winners & losers. PERIOD. Why the hell then have award shows when the winner has already been established?

If you don't like sports awards then don't watch them. I suspect that like mine, your remote has a button on it that allows you to change the chanel.

Your quality of life will improve so much when you have learnt this simple trick.

Who has been the better player this season: Kevin de Bruyne, Kylian Mbappe or Raphael Varane?

Objectively-speaking, of course. Please show your working.

That's another problem that I have with these silly awards. How many Goalkeepers or defensive minded players have won the Ballon D'Or?

I don't know if you've heard of the Laureus Awards?

They have a category for Sportsman of the year & the nominees come from different types of sporting codes.

What criteria are you going to use to determine who the sportsman of the year is when you have Lebron James, Lionel Messi, Djokovic, Mayweather etc in the same category? Different sporting codes all lumped up together. Are you kidding me right now?

I have a problem with this line of argument.

If there was an extremely racist or anti-semetic TV show on air, would you still adopt the same line of thinking (i.e if you don't like it, just change the channel) or would you write a strongly worded letter to the broadcaster demanding that it be taken off air?

I have written my fair share of strongly worded letters to a few radio stations, tv channels & print publications regarding content that I found offensive.

I am a firm believer in people power & holding THE MAN to account. Try it sometimes. It is very empowering.
