I did follow the ‘popular view’ of him regarding the appeasing. But I’m not sure (in his position) I’d have done much differently to him without the benefit of hindsight we currently have.

Does that mean I’m prepared to look at Haig in a different light? Probably not

Not my personal opinion but many people give Nevile the credit for giving us TIME to prepare for a war. Maye he was clever or maybe he just got lucky.

There is that view; and there’s also a view supported by a mate of mine that we should have attacked Germany from the west instead of trying to fight a defensive war.

My mate believes it would have provided much needed relief to Poland plus the Germans were more suited to an attacking war and whilst they were elsewhere the allies missed a chance to end the war almost at the beginning.

Or maybe he just had no balls. I know its just a film but in the recent "Darkest Hour" film he was portrayed as someone who wanted to surrender and sue for peace once France had fallen and did his best to undermine Churchill's resolve in Parliament.

I knew Halifax was plotting and he wanted to sue for peace. I always believed he wanted to be PM but wanted to be put in the position by the people and was too scared to take the job just by succeeding either Chamberlain or Churchill.

As soon as Churchill got the support he required in the House he reversed his 'keep your friends close but your enemies closer' policy and basically got him out of the way

To be honest Churchill wasn't a great PM. Not for the usual requirements of the job, but he was what we needed at the time.
