Salary caps would have to be worldwide as its a worldwide sport. Otherwise you'll have leagues like China or some middle Eastern league step in and pay players vast amounts of money to play there. Right now, top players can make a great amount in EU and then move there at the end of their career or if their career has stalled. But introduce caps and many would make the move.

Seems unlikely, they might head there but not when they'd really be missed.
200k a week or whatever the "cap" may be wouldn't be such a huge deterrent IMO. The problem with a cap is that money is still there but would likely end up in the pockets of people who offer next to nothing to the game... players are at least the most important aspect to the spectacle - they're what the money generated is being paid for.

I think what CiC is saying is that if you put a cap on EU salaries then players are likely to go abroad irrespective of old age and dross skills.
If salary caps are to be considered then they need to be universal, not league or continent specific.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Just can't see the appeal ever being that high, regardless of wages but I guess you never know

Scruttocks, I like your idea in your OP.
Salary caps seem to work okay in principally single league only sports. NBA, AFL, NRL, etc. I don't see how it could be internationally enforced no matter how effective they can be.
Unfortunately, for your idea, I don't see the PL knocking back their staggering broadcasting deals any time soon...
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you know if they have the issue I mentioned in those US sports?
I can imagine they're all massive cash cows for billionaires. No risk of relegation and no worries about players getting bumper money overseas. Their drafting system seems good though, keeps things interesting but would makes little sense in football.
I don't see my idea ever taking off either. What's really bad IMO is how shafted people and pubs in the UK when it comes to watching football. A fraction of the games while paying often 10 x the price.
For my idea to work it would need to be FIFA/UEFA capping the amount of money each competition can be paid for the rights. Never gonna happen though.
On the short term, it may not be an issue, but if it were a long term thing, players will go who pays them best. It is a short career.
China are looking to grow the sport and want to be a super power within it. Look at how they have grown in other industries. They'll try to take advantage of it.
Right now, the limitations are due to the rules in the Asian Federation so they can develop home talent. When they reaches are certain level of competence, they'll relax the rules.
Football is being back by the state here. Chinese companies buying up foreign companies must do so to advance the Chinese government's goals, this includes the football club ownerships, such as the Milan clubs. I believe one of the owners was told to do so or have his assets in China frozen.
They want to win the world Cup by 2050. And the current leader could be a leader for a long time as they recently removed the two term limit, initially put into place due to Chairman Mao and his rule.
I think you’ve got to pretty much just ignore the money side of football now. It’s become obscene but the game is awash with money.
The surgeon that saves lives on a daily basis will get less money in a year than Ramsey will get in a week, but surgery isn’t a spectator sport, thankfully.
Paying Sanchez 400 grand a week might be a place to start when talking about ridiculous wages and inflated wages.

Sounds like a show that would be a success. Sky Sports:scalple channel?
Why should footballer's have a wage cap? They are getting paid market rate. The top of any field will be getting paid huge amounts.
If demand for the game drops then so will revenues but the game just keeps growing and the players are an integral part of that and should be rewarded accordingly.

Suck it up people, because the 21st century is only going to see income inequality widen. People better get used to it.
