But some buffoon decided Torres was a better bet at £50m - Aguero wouldn't even have cost that!

More than likely the same buffoons who brought in Pato. Or more recently signings like Morata. Sadly the people in charge of these error signings are still at the club and will likely to continue sabotaging the club with these decisions.
And that in a nutshell is why we desperately need a top Sporting Director to make sure that we no longer make these kind of horrow show transfer decisions again.
Torres was Ancelotti's decision iirc. Dunno whether it was him who passed on Aguero though.
ZZ as DoF, I wonder if he would be interested in that role, and Frank to take over the team, sounds good to me !

The retrospective Emenalo was amazing crowd will be glad to know he's available. Must be the only DoF in history who was sacked to facilitate the return of a manager he fired.... after a mere three months

Ancelotti likely had a say but I doubt it was his decision. Shevchenko was brought in without Mourinho's say so for example. That was another club decision.
The reports at the time said Ancelotti just told the club we needed a striker and was happy with either Aguero or Torres.
You suspect Torres was a club decision cos we were after him for years. Wanted him as a teenager, were in for him when Liverpool bought him, and had a 70mil offer turned down in the summer window before we did get him.
