Forget last night, Modric wasn't even that good last season - by no means his best at Madrid. He was simply the most recognisable name whose team also did well at the World Cup, where, if we're honest, Messi was rank when it mattered.
The Ballon d'Or has become pretty nonsensical in recent years. I understand that team success should be given some weight in people's votes, but it often seems to weigh more heavily than individual performance, which is absurd.
I think most if not all fans know who the better player is, and was last season, which is more important.
IOAG.....in other words ,rank favouritism ,and a few greased palms from Perez again ...no !
As we know ,RM are a shambles ,and have been for the last couple of years or more .Ronaldo and Zidane knew exactly what they were doing when they got out,
It should have been Varane
A lot of the time it comes to the World Cup on it's year.
Cannavaro got the Balon Dor for his WC performance in 2006 despite the fact the season prior we alone had 3 better CB's.
The Ballon d'Or voting might as well be done on twitter. It's all about who's marketable and not who the best players are.
To be fair, Modric did deserve recognition. Maybe not for last year particularly but for over the last 3/4 he's been great.

1 goal 2 assists in 4 games in a shocking team isn’t rank to me! But fair enough. Just madness.
"When his team needed him most"
Stepping up to miss the potential match-winning penalty vs Iceland.
Goiong virtually awol vs Croatia (think he managed 40-odd touches the entire game).
Choking himself out of the game vs Nigeria after they'd equalised, despite having scored a worldie and played his best half of football at the tournament in the opening 45.
Despite what the stats say, he was ineffectual vs France, incapable of influencing or swaying the play. The 'assist' for Argentina's go-ahead goal was a mere accident - a run-of-the-mill shot that took an awkward deflection and wrong-footed Lloris. The second, his only real assist of the tournament, came in the 3rd minute of injury time, when Argentina had already hailed their taxi.
All things considered, I'd say it was comfortably Messi's poorest World Cup.
The balloon door became a joke when Modric won. I don't have anything against Modric but everyone in football knows Messi and Ronaldo still run this show and are head and shoulders above the rest.
I feel sorry for Modric because I bet even he knows that and if he doesn't he's a deluded Muppet
