Love asking interviewees their expected wage, the only fun part
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I often go for....'There is no rigid fixed salary for this position - we like to ask the candidates what their expectations are and then after the interviews we make a decision based on who we feel would be the best fit with us and who would add the most value for what they would cost'
And then you see their faces.....cannae pitch too high or I might price myself out of it.....cannae pitch too low or I will look like I am desperate....

Always pitch too high salary wise, if you turn out to be awful at your job then you will be let go.
When i moved through here i made sure they were giving me a hefty rise as well as my travel costs included in my salary.
3 months in i downgraded to the bus to put those costs to better use
Then we decided to get a house and now I'm skint again

If/When I move on from my job it will be for a hefty rise. I am far more confident in my commercial experience and level of work.
I calculated that if I was to consider a job Livingston to Edinburgh way I'd be putting on 2 tanks of fuel a month (£120 roughly plus wear and tear so call it £150).
My travel time right now is max of 30 mins. To go out there I'd be adding 2 hours a day average so 40 hours a week (an extra weeks work a month so roughly 3 months work time a year 25% extra), Throw in loss of family time etc as a result and you would be looking at getting at least a 25% pay rise just to break even on where I am.
To make it worthwhile it would need to be a career making role or upwards of 30-35% pay rise

Some folk will say 'I am on £x in my last role and I am looking at this as a step up so I would expect the salary to reflect that' type of thing.
Some folk will pitch themselves high and say they are worth it due to the benefits they will bring to the company. And fair play to them because they are setting themselves up if they go down that road.
The risk is reduced these days in that you can basically let anyone go hassle free within 2 years.
Theres not many folk that can get through an interview, convince you they are worth the extra investment, but then hide the fact they are utter keech at their job and a bit of a to$$er for two full years.
If I am recruiting anyone at manager level or above I will always make sure I get them out for a meal and a few drinks with some of the other senior guys within a couple of weeks of them starting.
It is amazing what you find out about folks after a few beers.
Probation periods are longer now too.
My work is 3 months and to be fair, if you don't justify your salary in that time then you're not very good at your job.
