Scary thing is he's captain too
Young I suspect is a model pro and his effort isn't in doubt which is why he plays but he is beyond the Gary Neville stage of retirement poor.
Rojo however I thought was decent against WHU and should have come in.
He's never been good enough for United, and the fact he's been here long enough to almost have a testimonial game speaks volumes for the recruitment in this club.

Who was he meant to play last night tho?
Throw a kid in against barca away and you could destroy him
I don't rate young btw... Just don't see a lot of choice for ole at the moment... Dalot maybe but he's looked better further forward than at right back imo
I think it's just a case of player availability right now rather than OGS wanting to select Young all the time.
Shaw suspended, Valencia 'injured'. Dalot raw (could have selected him possibly). Rojo just back from injury (came off early at weekend) and probably wise not to pick him again just 3 days later.
Young has fallen off a cliff though. A small cliff admittedly, but I think given the opportunity, OGS will not have him in the team on a regular basis.
I've seen a lot of people say this.
To that I respond, "who would you have started?"
Would you have thrown in Dalot, who clearly isn't ready for that type of occasion?
There weren't any other options if we are honest.
Just read about the vile abuse he is suffering by racist internet hard men today.
These b@stards need sorting!

What was wrong with Dalot's performance in the first leg? In fact he was the one that came closest to scoring as well.
its more a issue of the club not realising the sell by date of our players, guys like Neville, rooney and even to an extent evra and Ferdinand were kept a few years longer than needs be, worrying thing now is we have players at the club not just a few years but almost half a decade past their sell by date still with us
Why not worry after the summer and not now, when we are still recovering from a huge injury crisis and have very few established players in any form.
If Ole is not trying to address the issue during the window, that slate away... But as of right now he had the choice of trying out a youngster and possibly killing his confidence or going with an old hand that doesn't often let us down.

maybe young of 5-6 years ago but this season all he's done is let us down
This is so reminiscent of Sarri and his insistence on playing the likes of Alonso and now Higuain

Would I have thrown in Dalot ahead of Ashley Young, absolutely.
How is he not ready for the occasion? We know what Ashley young is capable of and i's not a lot. I'm not saying we would have won with Dalot there but he's surely a better option than Young. It's not down to Young that we haven't invested wisely on full backs in recent years, but that doesn't mean he's the only option
Tbf last night I would have gone with this side
DDG
Jones Smalling Lindelof
Lingard McT Fred Pogba Dalot
Lukaku Rashford
But maybe whatever started would have lost

I mostly agree with this, but all he does is let us down. Dalot has had a good few big games this season and could have been played instead of Young very easily.

This too... Young has been a revelation at LB in the past season or so and put in some 8 or 9 out of 10 games earlier this season. Again, I'd not give him another contract but I would have selected him last night and I wouldn't blame our recent poor form on him.

Is it possible that Dalot wasn't played because Solskjaer foresaw bringing him on in attacking role? That Young shows greater leadership and professionalism than anyone else in the squad?
JSPC calls this right. In the absence of Shaw and Valencia (and with the squad inherited from Mourinho), the defence was always going to have a patched-up quality. Young wasn't a primary reason we were beaten last night. But let's indulge an extended moan because he's high on the current hate-list.
I really don't get the downbeat mood. Six months ago at the twilight of Jose's United career everyone knew that getting back to where we need to be would be a slow process. When Ole was appointed, the consensus was that Top 4 was unattainable, PSG would sweep us embarrassingly aside and that generally results wouldn't matter as long as the football took a step in the right direction.
How things have changed. Against Barcelona we pressed gamely over the two legs and for spells pinned them back. We tried to attack them. They didn't carve us open that often (by their standards) and it took the genius of arguably the greatest player of all time + an freak own goal + a dreadful error from DDG to make the end result look so decisive.
The highs of Ole's first couple of months were never going to be sustainable. The creeping doubts (some implicit, some explicit) about OGS and the general mood of pessimism suggest that many of us didn't really mean what we said in December-January when we made those declarations of sensibly muted expectations.
The path to the top is going to be hard work. There could be hard work and more failure (particularly if Woodward fails to reform the club structure and bring in the right DoF, and - crucially - empower him).
For me, the thing is this. If United not being as amazing as we'd like them to be makes you ever so sad, if you don't get some pleasure from identifying with the players (including the players who are failing) and from hope about the next match, the next season, if not for that - what's the point?
I think that we need to let Ole have a transfer window before criticising him for Young. We have few leaders in the team and Young is a model pro, captain and somewhat of a leader (although not a great one). We need a dominant CB or CM to come in and grab the team by the scruff of the neck.
Even that's not true though... It's only been since our recent slump under Ole, and that is team wide really.
...........
He has been mostly sh!te since the day we signed him. He has had about 2 or 3 very short spells where he has played above average.
