More on what more could have been done - nothing he says

I don't have any criticsm to make to anyone, everything that could be done has been done but you know that in January James was going to come and he didn't come. I'm not underlying the importance of losing James, I am underlying the struggles of getting James. I think the club did everything that it could do, more than it could do, to find the solutions to the means of the teams. With James or without him, we should have finished first or second, without any doubt. The game against Wigan illustrates the trend that the team has been suffering all season because we have had many games that we deserved to win and didn't win. But the game of Wigan was an example of this. Obviously it was not our destiny to finish or second and we can't explain it, or maybe we could have an explanation - we need twice as many chances as our opponents to score a goal. But you can't say a team that has had 15 chances and 75 per cent of possession that they didn't deserve what they wanted. If I was listening to this press conference and a fan of Leeds I would say this - this is not enough of an explanation, it's not enough to heal the disillusion, our state of mind, it's not linked to a personal matter, it's not linked to the personal pride of reaching something but it's just because we were not able to give a response to all of the fans of Leeds - those who are in the world of football give us possibility that the vast majority of people don't have, no matter what they do. We have the possibility of producing happiness and hope and when you produce sadness and disillusion you can't pretend that the arguments you are giving will erase these feelings. For some losses and some feelings you don't have any arguments and football is a disproportional element and someone listening to this would say this man is talking about a big loss as if it was a big loss that you couldn't heal - a serious one and the fact that we have finished first or second is not something you can't change. But we feel like that and the fans more than us so you can't hide the fact that people suffer because of this. When I say what I am saying, I always think how people would evaluate what I am saying and some people feel vindicated because I feel like that because they have more important problems than that. But football is like that so I make comments on football but I also look at what life is, that's why the interpretation is strange.

On Villa

It's a team with offensive skills that are diferent to the other teams, they have many offensive players, they have many wingers, they have an offensive spirit and many of these players are playing at a very good level.

That's Bielsa done - an epic and very strong stuff

Bielsa saying these individual players won't produce such consistent performances in another season again

Bielsa's final words...

I would say that my results link me more to defeat than to success. In my personal career.

Cheers Sol

There's a hell of a lot to digest here - wow going to have to mull some of these points over before further comment.

The one about consistency again with same players is an eye opener!

I think he's said what we're all thinking. To be so close is gutting but nobody expected this squad to get anywhere near where it has and nobody would expect it to happen again.

He may have said it for a few reasons. One purely because he's just an open and honest individual and doesn't hide from what he believes is the truth. Another would be to send a message to Radz and Orta that he believes the club needs massively strengthening to compete next season if we don't go up via playoffs. I feel him staying on next season may depend on what finances the club are willing to inject.

Again, I feel it would be a case of us needing to sell to raise the money though. People like Clarke, Jansson, Roofe and Phillips will be hard to keep if good offers come in.

Will be astonished if this thread does not fly!

There is so much in here for us to disect.

It's a really intense read - but I think I make out similar to others. These players have exceeded expectation and are unlikely to replicate next season - I guess he means if we're still in this league? Promotion would always mean additions to the squad and better ones.

I'm worried it means he's had enough

Very strong stuff from Bielsa regarding the players not doing it again. I think they would if we;

1. Kept Bielsa
2. Scored more goals
3. Improved squad depth so we can rotate a bit

His methods clearly work but our flaws of the previous campaigns are still present.

1. He appears to be implying that he’s floggedd the horses so hard they’ll never be the same again! What I think he means us we got the very best out of them and what you see is their best level.

2. He’s implying we’ve been unlucky. I agree with him. There’s a fine kind between luck and efficiency. Individual matches are decided on moments of brilliance or mistakes that you expect to even out of the season. I don’t think they have with us... you an argue this is a quality of player issue but I think we haven’t had the breaks either.

3. Where I think he is not offering full disclosure is on the efficiency point. True that we don’t make enough killer passes and true that we flunk too many of the ones we do make BUT I would hazard a guess that the chances to score of Norwich and Sheff united have been lesser in volume but greater in quality than ours. Part of our inefficiency is in creating good chances rather than half chances.

After a season in the top two most of the time, with a coach like Bielsa and fans that are second to none, and they fail to get promoted, then we can safely say this team is not good enough and a few of these players are just not up to it.....He's seen this league now, and knows the capabilities of his players and worked out which he wants and which he doesn't.

IF he stays (please)

How many of the better players will stay.

Personally, I could see Phillips, Jansson and possibly Roofe going.

So we'd have to replace those 3 huge players for us AS WELL as find the extra MB will want.

Personally I don't see Orta identifying the talent or AR paying for it (i.e funding over and above what we recoup on player sales)

This is the closest Bielsa will come to saying this squad is not good enough

I we don't go up, it could be the end for Leeds, don't think we've come so close, and the dissappoinment will be too hard to take.I still have hope we'll make it to the premiership.by May.

Sounds like Bielsa has given up, this is hardly likely to inspire the team for the playoffs. Season dead as a Dodo!

Spot on... my take from it too.

Disagree with him. I think with additions like Daniel James and a few other Bielsa type players to the current squad, we'll be up there again.

If we had Neal Maupay in this side we'd be promoted by now.

It felt like a bit of a post mortem reading the quotes. We've still got a chance to go up - automatically (incredibly unlikely) and playoffs. Hope this is an attempt to motivate players rather than an admission of defeat.

He's right about the squad though. There's a lack of quality. If we had a winger who could contribute more assists and goals than Harrison with 3 and 2, then we'd be second. If we had a centremid who was better than Klich, who has been very hot and cold since the turn of the year, then we'd be 2nd.

I don't think this squad would struggle next season but to turn them into champions, they need to add 3 quality players and pace.

I don't think he's saying they're not good enough, I think its more "these players have given all they could and it would be very difficult for them to play that standard off football for a whole season again!..

Its a known fact that Bielsa's teams fall away towards the end, these players people shouldn't forget most of were being slagged of from people on this,(and other!)boards, forums!..

He knows the players have done all he's asked them to do, it was just a step to far, but we all know they've done better than most were saying they would!..

Credit should be given to these players after the stick they took last year, but credit should also be given to Bielsa and his team for getting these players to give this club a much needed lift!..

2nd might be a bridge to far, but I think he and these players will be fired up to give it the best they can in the play offs, they win then they are winners, they lose it wont be for the lack of trying!..

I was very surprised about those words from him. Almost a little in disbelief.

That sounded like he's throwing in the towel, and won't be here next season. Unless there are major changes in the team.

What I don't understand, is why he said that now. Just before the play-offs. Is this really the kind of words, that would inspire players?

I agree with you Loidis. We've had a week to take in the last two results, and we have to get our heads ready for the play-offs. He should be pulling the team together, not breaking it apart. He sounds disillusioned with the team and with his own performance as coach. It's good to be honest, but this kind of talk can wait till the end of the season. He actually sounds depressed. I can't imagine Wilder or Farke ever giving a presser like this one, can you?

I agree with this. It's like he's given up. And says to his players: "You are not good enough to be in the play-offs. You are just lucky to be there, because you have me as a coach, and you have all overachieved because of that."

This kind of just killed the hope for the of season for me.
Couldn't he at least have waited till the end of the season?

I am just hoping he says something differently to the players...
