Now if a Chinese guy had the same problem, then we're talking about something interesting

posted on 15/6/24

Imagine if Bentancur had said that instead? We'd probably be feeling sorry for him. Like is he a bit simple or something, he can't tell his teammate from a random Korean guy? But we know that's not what he saying..

It's a recognised phenomenon, and an ongoing field of study:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-race_effect#:~:text=Same%2Drace%20faces%20are%20more,than%20other%2Drace%20faces%20are.

So whilst it COULD be intended to offend, it COULD also just be an expression of the person's own weaknesses or personal perception.

My point is that we shouldn't automatically assume it was intended to offend, and if it wasn't intended to offend then there's no logical reason to take it in an offensive way. That's all I'm saying.

I'm saying that pointing out certain people have difficulties in identifying different races, is NOT the same as saying they all look the same

That I don't agree with at all. There's tons of things you could do that would be offensive through ignorance or cultural norms etc. It's not good enough these days to act like you didn't know. Do better. It doesn't cost anything to not offend people, and usually it's pretty darn easy

Right. That's a great point about the words you use being important. An accurate response to your predicted result, would be that 'I'm bad at telling Chinese people apart' not that they all look the same.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Right, but the person might not know that.
They might not know that it's a personal weakness of there's, they might think that white people look similar to one another. So that's what they say when they communicate the point.

It might also be made as a 'joke' without intending to be offensive. I don't subscribe to the 'it's comedy, so who cares if it's offensive' school of thought, but although I adhere to its principles, I don't personally subscribe to the 'it involves race in some way + it's a joke = therefore it's automatically offensive and racist and should be against the law' school of thought either.

Well in this case, didn't know that it's joke about all Asians looking the same. Obviously he forgot he's going to be on TV back home, probably just got back in the Uruguay vibe.

But more generally I was thinking like walking into a temple talking loudly on your phone, walking into a friend's house and putting your feet up on the table, taking the last slice of pizza when you've already had more than your share..

Intent is important but it doesn't mean your actions can't be rude or offensive. Just means you get a bit more leeway with being told off. Like Bentancur should.. to an extent. But neither should he be humoured like a child

walking into a temple talking loudly on your phone - I don't think that needs to be taught (assuming you understand that the temple is a place of worship). It's just common sense to know that that's a matter of courtesy respect.

taking the last slice of pizza when you've already had more than your share - ditto

walking into a friend's house and putting your feet up on the table - maybe that is taught etiquette

but take another example of etiquette, for example using the outside piece of cutlery.

if I'm in a restaurant with someone (unlikely) and they take the inside piece of cutlery, I'm not going to take personal offence.

any more than if they are visiting my country and tell me that white people all look the same.

I gave glib lazy examples cos they're not important, they illustrate the same point. It's not about being taught, it's about doing things without intending to offend someone still causing intent.

How about a fart at a funeral?

We have known about Eze for a long time and only just discovered he has a release clause, which we are now exploring. We are on the ball at least.

Seems like all our top attacking targets are expensive and are injury prone. It bodes well.
