There was a tweet from stats bomb (24/06/20) showing that out of PL midfielders. Only Rodri, Guendouzi and Kovacic had more progressive carries per 90 & only 7 players had attempted more progressive passes per 90.

Why the killer pass though? Assuming the role that he has been playing for the past 12 months, I don’t think it is the responsibility for a deep-lying midfielder to play killer passes. Just a lot of safe smart passes and good progressive passes to players who should themselves play killer passes?

Well if he wants to step up a level it would help him massively. Otherwise he is just going to be an average player which is fine if that what he wants to be.

Also chipping in with the odd goal or two. From memory the only times he has scored for us were against West Ham and Fulham.

It is not uncommon for a centre midfielder to play a killer pass or score a goal. Look at John McGuinn for example. Similar players but McGuinn takes on more responsibility

McGinn plays in a totally different role to Winks though? His comparison would be against the likes of Lo Celso, Mount etc

If it’s any consolation I’m not the biggest fan of Winks, albeit i think he is one of two regulars to improve under Jose.

Yet I feel as a creative DM, he does everything that is expected of him when we have the ball. I like him less defensively.

I just want him to be more Roy Keane-esque but deep down I feel he will become no better than Scott Parker minus the goals. Although Parker was not prolific he did chip in with a few bangers every now and again.

I think Winks’s issue is he doesn’t quite fit the profile of either a Poch or Jose midfielder - both who require DMs/CMs to be super athletic. I think he’d be much better for Pep or Rodgers or Sarri or international football etc.
In the defensive midfield role he doesn’t quite provide enough defensively - in a role further forward as an 8 he doesn’t quite seem to provide enough in the final third that the position needs. Very much a jack of all trades who excels in more ‘continental’ style football

Scott Parker didn’t score a single goal for us

He did for Chelsea and Charlton.

I have never called Dele a lard a$$. Check mate.

Ideally a DM will chip in with 2 or 3 goals a season but it’s bottom of the list for them to do.

Move winks into a more B2B CM role and I’m sure he’d get a few goals a season.

Good player and important for the squad

A lot of the best deeper lying playmakers don’t really score goals. Busquets doesn’t, Veratti doesn’t, Alonso didn’t, Carroll didn’t. It’s not really their job.

They were/are all more defensively sound than winks however

I did say Parker was not prolific but he has scored some bangers. I'm just saying there is room for improvement in Winks' game if he wants to go to another level.

2 goals and 2 assist in 142 appearences is weak.

I don't see Winks as a DM when we play a double pivot. I see him as an 8. As MK said he is a good squad player and with a proper DM maybe we will see another side of him.

Tbh I have no clue how he will perform with a DM beside him. As I said I just don’t think he necessarily has an obvious role at the moment.

MK a couple of questions. Did you ever see Dele at MK Dons? Did he play as DM there?
