Greatteams, I'd recommend it. Went to the south island of Okinawa, which is beautiful and very chilled out. Went to Tokyo too which is the opposite side of the spectrum but also good in its own way.

Really ? Missing out mate. Culture, food, people and general beauty of Southeast Asia is incredible. You have never seen sky line views until you go to Hong Kong. I loved Asia.
I tell you what has never appealed to me, Russia. Also despite everyone saying how amazing it is, South Africa is another place I’m not to sure about. I guess it’s crime rate I’m a little put off with, but a lot of people say South Africa especially Cape Town is amazing.

I enjoyed Russia and just about all the former Russian states I have visited but it is quite a challenge at times, they seem to go out of their way to complicate things. St Petersburg in particular was a really cool city though with some legendary sites.
And I agree with South Africa, if I were to list all the African countries in order of interest to me it would likely come in the bottom ten, not due to the crime but I just find the unexplored places far more interesting.

I agree about Costa Rica ... been there 3 times and will be going again. Only time I've seen a Harpy Eagle.
And a Mountain Lion close up ... just lying down by a stream having an after lunch nap. Dunno what it had eaten, but it wasn't me!
Been too many other places to mention, oh yes.. The Great Barrier Reef.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
High on my wish list is to see a wild Harpy, seen one caged in Brazil and was mesmerized. Spend a lot of my life chasing birds around the USA.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not the kind of bird that would be happy in a cage.
Why was it caged?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No idea, i would like to think it was a rescue but that is likely not the case in a backward thinking place like Brazil when it comes to nature.
Reminds me now of a place i visited in China one time, i think it was near Guilin but can't remember, but anyway, the guide said that there was a tiger rehabilitation center and they allowed them to 'hunt' and so on before releasing them.
The place held hundreds of tigers and a certain species of bear, i forget the name now, but anyway the place was horrific and these tigers for the most part were never going anywhere. I did get to see one 'hunt', by that it was released into a large fenced pasture with a cow in the middle, it would have been comical if it were not so pitiful but after plenty of chasing around in circles the Tiger figured out the cow had nowhere to go and eventually launched itself onto its back but never brought it down really, just hung to its neck for fifteen minutes before the 'helpers' came in to end the misery, at one point the tiger is running away from the cow which was then shot while the chinese are chasing both in a buggy. Madness!!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm giving financial support to wildlife organizations that are, among other activities, trying to educate the Chinese about wildlife. They are the pits when it comes to providing the motives for poaching of all sorts.

Yes Ethiopia is probably in the top three I want to get to, looks a fascinating country with stacks of history.
My mate is going to Mauritania tomorrow for a couple of days and then working in Sweden for the week before going to Sudan next weekend. Don't know where he finds the energy!!
Would make a point of hitting Namibia when I go to Botswana for sure, does look pretty random
Keep flip flopping on this year's plan.
Was going to be Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Malaysia, Brunei and Myanmar, with stopovers in Tokyo going and Seoul coming back but as the year progresses we are now considering South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi.
Either one would be like four or five weeks but depends more on the seasons really.

I’ve seen almost nothing of Asia - only Mumbai. Vietnam definitely appeals, as does Thailand.
One thing I remember about Africa is that travellers I met there said it was much more expensive than SE Asia and Latin America in terms of excursions and activities. There just isn’t the same tourist trail, hostels etc. I spent a lot on about five tours in Africa. Hiring a car is probably the best way but would bring its own stresses.
Doubt I’ll be going far this year
Yes me and the misses are debating on our honeymoon next year. Do we do the usual standard beach type honeymoon destination like the Maldives, which to be fair both of us really want to go and see. Or do we do another trip to Asia which we loved. We were thinking Bali, Singapore and Hong Kong again. She’s always wanted to go Singapore and me Bali, so the best of both worlds. Totally different holidays, but w nice dilemma to have

Yeah I would like to hire a car for parts but given it would be our first visit to that region I am not sure that's such a wise idea though I wouldn't care in South Africa the rest would be a lot more sketchy.
Obviously want to do some safari bits but it's a crap shoot, don't want the over touristy ones but sometimes it's just the low stress option.
SE Asia is real easy to navigate by train/bus and I wouldn't imagine driving is that tough away from the cities. Have used mopeds plenty.
Have gone all over south and central America by bus and generally speaking it's easy enough though the quality varies greatly on the sleeper buses.

TRue, but still can keep yourself busy in Maldives, by obviously a lot of the trips will be water based. Unless you take a trip to the capital Male

Some of the more random places I have been would be
Turkmenistan
Kyrgyzstan
Kazakhstan
Uzbekistan
Tajikistan
China
Tahiti
Belarus
Ukraine
Russia
Honduras
Nicaragua
El Salvador
Bolivia
Peru
Overall I have been to around 75 or so countries I think, give or take.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What was Central Asia like? It’s a part of the world if I did travel I’d want to see. You don’t hear a lot about it but reading online they seem interesting. Former Soviet countries with lots of oil, and seem to be building some remarkable cities.
I also like the idea of travelling round South America. All the countries entice me, Brazil, Argentina, Chile especially.
A lot of my mates (I’m in my early 20s) seem to do SE Asia. Looks good but a well trodden path.
I’m reading through this thread now but it seems not a lot have been to sub-Saharan Africa. Perhaps a bit neglected for most ‘travellers’. I’ve been to Nigeria twice and I find it fascinating every time I go, and want to go back there for work experience in my degree. However perhaps it’s more fascinating for me as my family are from there. Lagos is planning a totally new district in Lagos made from land reclaimed from the sea that is aiming to be the new Dubai that I keep my eye on.
And although this thread’s probably finished..any hidden (or even not so hidden) gems/underrated places people have liked to visit in British Isles? I’ve never been and it’s so awkwardly out the way + probably full of old people but some of the coastal towns and villages in Cornwall look peng. I visited Cardiff recently and I really like the look and feel of their City centre. I have been based in Southampton recently and they should look at Cardiff to see on how to rejuvenate a coastal city centre with no beach.
And talking about urban centres, I passed through Geneva once on the way to my mate’s chalet in France. My goodness it’s like the ultimate metropolitan urban area, the streets are clean, every building is magnificent, it all fits together in a way you can’t describe, spectacular waterfront. The only other city I’ve heard described like that is Singapore, never been there. Absolutely loved Geneva until I saw the prices for everything

Yeah nowt against South Africa and we shall definitely visit. Like the sound of the Drakensburg area, is it the wine region as well?! I just prefer the unknown hence some of the random places I have travelled to.

I’ve heard good things about Ethiopia.
I didn’t visit Drakensburg but did a brilliant wine tour around the Cape Town area. Also visited Namibia. Surreal desert landscapes and Windhoek is a strange place.

Defo the Singapore trip i say though I have zero interest in beaches, the missus though would quite happily chill for a few days and also wants to hit the Maldives. I do but feck knows how it would hold my attention long

TRue, but still can keep yourself busy in Maldives, by obviously a lot of the trips will be water based. Unless you take a trip to the capital Male

Some of the more random places I have been would be
Turkmenistan
Kyrgyzstan
Kazakhstan
Uzbekistan
Tajikistan
China
Tahiti
Belarus
Ukraine
Russia
Honduras
Nicaragua
El Salvador
Bolivia
Peru
Overall I have been to around 75 or so countries I think, give or take.
