Who is rich?

From September 2018:

"More than a fifth of the population live on incomes below the poverty line after housing costs are taken into account, even though most of these households are in work. Nearly one in three children live in poverty and the use of food banks is rising."

We're the 5th richest nation in the world. Regardless of your political leanings, there's absolutely no way we should be facing the problems mentioned above.

Not at all Sandy. Paid £90k for a 3 bedroom house in 2008 and £140k for a 3 bed bungalow near the coast in 2017. They're not the cheapest available either. You could get two houses for half that here.

With more and more people being able to work from home though perhaps things will (slowly) change in more expensive places?

If the middle class have been squeezed over the last ten years or so, then the poor and disabled within our society have been pulped.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not sure about the disabled and how they have been shafted. But being poor in Britain today is relative.

Universal credit is like £24k per annum. Properly managed, one can get a good living out of this amount.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Is it? UC is about £250 a month for under 25's, and just over £300 for over 25's, I think it's about £400 for couples.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

UC has also not been properly managed and people are frequently given insufficient funds per month. It has been an absolute disaster. Plenty of evidence to show how much of a mess it's been.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Aye, if you make your income via temping, for example, and you sign on, they take your earnings away from your monthly UC payment.

The problems arise if you don’t get another temp job for, say, 3-4 weeks. That £350 pounds or so you made in the first two weeks of June, has to last you until the end of July/beginning of May.

Mmm, what should I spend that extra money on?

A German car or a foreign holiday, the money will trickle down but to Otto at the Audi factory or Pepe the Portugese bar owner.

Me and Mrs DC live pretty comfortably off approx £40k between us a year so I do sympathise with those in expensive areas like London. Then again, if you are luxky enough to own property in London then you've got a big asset there. I don't think I'd swap living between the beach and the mountains for London even if my wages were doubled or even tripled.

It is an unequal society though and that is something that needs to be addressed. Where I work success seems to be measured by what grade you are and, whilst it would be nice to get an extra few quid in the pocket, I don't have to work in the evening and can take advantage of where I live.

If we made sure that everybody paid the tax they're due to pay then everyone (well the vast majority) would be better off IMO.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
£50k wow. I'm guessing you own your home outright then. Where do you live ?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I've actually got two houses with mortages on both! Rent money from one, plus petrol saving by moving closer to work, pays for both houses.

I live in Conny County in Wales. Llandudno being the nearest big town I'd imagine you'd have maybe heard of.

The famous trickle down effect that never ever happens.

What happens when the rich spend that money abroad? Or simply save it, taking it out of the circular flow of income?

You aren't going to buy two loads of weekly shopping are you?

All the champagne vineyards and caviar farms of the UK will benefit I suppose (!)
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Our course it happens. People earn more, people spend more. We are all living examples.

Since my career has started my income has increased 4 fold. Back then i went out little, had a rubbish car, spent little on clothes and shopped for food economically.

Now spend much much more than then and no doubt you and everyone else is the same.

I received an ok bonus this year, first time in years. Saved a bit (which will be spent on the house when i have saved enough, which will end up employing soe local trades), booked a holiday for the family and treated myself to a new sound system.....BOOM, money back in the economy

Your local Audi dealer will take his commission, this pays their wages and bills, keeps the business going, keeps people employed.

You'll then need to take your car for a service/MOT. Being a nice new shiny car that you are proud of you'l take it to the local car wash where some minimum wage Serbian guy will wash it for you. You'll go for the top wash because you now dont mind spending £7 on a wash cos you have this lovely new car.

Its how the world works....you dont get that pay rise or tax cut or you get taxed more then you have less, you buy less and that trickles down.

I'm happy for you. That you are in a micro way able to support the local economy to the tune of about £50 a week.

However trickle down was the economic policy of Thatcher and Reagan.

Didn't work.

Based on the comments here it seems the main reason for this tax cut should be for people living in London, but you can't base your entire economy on London.

Surely there are ways to lower the cost of living in London without the need to lose the country £9billion?

Yep, help the essential workers that have to be in London.

This is the essential difference between Conservatives and others.....Rather than tax individuals high and spend, tax low which fosters a more competitive & prosperous economy which will deliver natural growth which in turn leads to higher tax revenue through indirect means.
======

I'm not saying that I follow this line of thinking, but the problem is I can easily flip this around and argue that higher taxes go towards a better NHS, education, social security, infrastructure etc. This means there are healthier and more knowledgeable people in society, helping those who are poor or disabled and reducing the wealth disparity between rich and poor people. This leads to a happier, more productive workforce and more jobs being created, which boosts economic development.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Higher taxes often leads to less overall tax revenue to go towards public services though. Look up the Laffer Curve if you're interested
