AJ, I didn't know that O'Driscoll had been sacked, where the hell have I been, I can not believe that they have got rid of him. Now I wonder if Nigel Clough needs an experienced assistant before some one else snaps him up? I'll say that before someone else says it.
Ajisa
I certainly do remember his debut against Wimbledon, as I watched on from the Colombo Terrace. What was obvious to everyone at that time was the way in which it transformed Derby from a run of the mill Div 1 outfit, to a team that would eventually finish 5th. That said, I doubt very much that Saunders would have made half the impact had he not been playing alongside the sublime Paul Goddard. We would have made Europe that year too had our country not been banned.
Now fast forward to today and make the relevant comparisons? If we are to make a concerted push for promotion this term, then something similar needs to happen. Before I am accused of asking for Financial irresponsibility from our owners, I am not asking for them to break the bank or agree to astronomical wages demands, merely the recognition that a couple more quality signings could provide us with an increase in momentum towards our common goal.

I don't think NC needs the support of an experienced Assistant. The more pressing issue is whether he will be allowed to invest in a quality striker and midfield playmaker to push us onwards and upwards.
The very best of luck to Dean Saunders in his new role, and a huge thanks to him for giving so much pleasure and providing so many great memories as a Rams fan.

Good grief. I know O'Driscoll was struggling, but because the Championship is increasingly becoming an unofficial Second Premier League with 'smaller' clubs being squeezed out, SOD is a victim of circumstances.
I am sorry for him and I hope he gets an opportunity at another club. I think Wassa makes a good point, but I expect SOD to return in charge of a club.
I can't see Saunders keeping them up, he's done a good job at Wrexham under difficult circumstances but as Nigel Clough found, the Championship is unremitting, the media profile & scrutiny more challenging, and there is a jump between Conference & Championship.
If Doncaster had to go for someone, then I think Mark Robins would have been a wiser appointment.
P.S
Ajisa, I wonder if you remember DS's strike against QPR also? The whole game was a dour affair, until Derby cleared a corner and the ball fell at DS's feet well inside his oqn half. He feined to trap the ball, with Paul Parker (then touted as the quickest defender in the country) breathing down his neck, turned and ran the whole length of the field before slotting past a helpless David Seaman (touted then, as the next England No1 before he moved to Arsenal) with precision. Certainly one of the most amazing goals I ever saw at the Old BBG, and the way he left Parker trailing in his wake was a sight to behold.
Apologies for going on, but if you're gonna bring up blasts from the past, expect me to join in every time
We would have made Europe that year too had our country not been banned.

I do indeed SDS. You're not going on, it's great reading other fans memories.
Away at Tottenham or Arsenal, or West Ham.
I remember Deano making Tony Adams look an absolute idiot.
Francis Banali for Southampton giving away 2 penalties to Deano, who then scored both spot kicks.
Endless quality.
Always got a lot of time for Deano although I agree its a massive step up.
However I know a Wrexham fan and the general opinion is there quite happy to see the back of him.
Great player but then that can quite often be the reason thyey don't tend to make great managers.

Go back a few months on here (ok, on 606) and the wrist-slashers were screaming out for O'Driscoll to be appointed at Derby.
Feel sorry for olde O Driscoll and not sure what Deano can provide that O Driscoll can't but you have to congratulate him on what he achieved with Doncaster and playing the game the right way.
Best of luck to olde Deano though, my only hero, I remember getting a signed autograph from him for my birthday when I was a member of the Junior Rams. I forgot all about my walkman with a rewind button on it and ran round the whole village screaming I've got Deano's autograph.
Good point about Goddard as an assist hero I remember Tony Cottee not being quite as effective after he left West Ham.
Best/worst memory of Deano they did a fake fire drill before I think it was the Newcastle game, the whole of the Key Club had to go on the pitch, Deano was warming up and sent the ball my way, the old man was shouting go on kick it back to him, I saw my moment of glory, froze under the pressure n some other get ran in front of me and passed it back to him (not as well as I would have though) ...that was the end of my professional football career.
Best of luck to olde Deano though...legend amongst men.
Eddie, would you like to divulge who the wrist slashers were?

Not forgetting that turn on Bruce at Old Trafford in what was, and still is the best away performance Ive witnessed from a Derby side!
Wassa
Thats not important, they know who they are
Wassa:
dcfChris, Mostyn and 666, mate.
The usual.
I'm sure that O'Driscoll will get picked up for a job soon enough - he created a darn good side at Doncaster on very limited funds and it seems (from the outside, of course) that the resources just ran out at the club. I could be wrong on that of course.
Anyway, Good Luck to Dean Saunders in his new job.
Mostyn must be salivating, both his choices are now 'on the market'...Sean O'Driscoll AND Alan Irvine!!
SDS, we must be of a similar age. I remember that game too.
Apart from the play off final, my best day as a Derby fan was away at Man U in April 1997 when Paulo Wanchope made his debut. He made Bruce, Pallister, Shmicheal and the like, look like amaterurs. I've still got the press cuttings. What a day that was. Inspired Jim Smith.
