Roy is under some pressure this match.

The people commenting on the BBC cricket articles really don't like Root do they? Some even suggesting he should be dropped

You'd think the one guy in our team averaging above 40 would be treasured.

Yeah, that really is crazy. Another example of short-termism which has infested cricket. People are written off after two or three poor innings, and lauded to the heavens after a single century. To be fair it's probably been brought on by the inconsistency throughout our batting lineup, but still - people need to look over the longer term. Dropping Root

Dearie me

Pope could be a future number 4 and Alec Stewart seems keen on helping England out so would probably be willing to move him up the order. Seems to have it in him to go big once he's in but he's one of many batsmen who's eyes light up when they get a hint of width.

Suggestions for our batting woes just baffle me sometimes. We all want to see proper batsmen in the top order but I've just seen a suggestion for Bess to bat at 3 as he looks composed and can bowl a bit. The guy is a spinner who has a few nice shots in his arsenal, he's not a test match 3!

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Same thought process that sees people suggest Curran, Woakes, Bairstow etc as top 3 bats. I honestly think it's a sign of a lack of wider cricketing perspective, perhaps people relatively new to the sport who see one good innings and view it as a sign of long-term ability.

At least with someone like Stokes you can see he has the mentality and technique to apply himself at the top of the order, and he does like it when the ball comes onto the bat quickly, but even then I don't think 3 would be a natural position for him. The other suggestions up there though... I mean, there's a reason they score freely when they're lower middle order with no pressure and an old ball to face. Whole different ball game.

Got my hopes up about Rob Yates from Warks now. I'll be keeping a close eye on him.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah I like the look of Rob Yates, he's in for Ian Bell which are some big shoes to fill and he seems to be improving as the season goes on. He's only averaging 30 but he's on an upward trajectory and he's only 19.

Root isn't in good form and his captaincy isn't great but the guy averages like 13/14 more than anyone else in the side. He's a class player though and that will shine through.

The BBC HYS articles generally get swamped by trolls and clueless people with the odd decent comment thrown in.

If we're batting and lose an early wicket then you'll be to blame not our fragile top order

Sounds like Bancroft is being dropped for Harris which seems a bit harsh given he's been outperforming Warner.

Harris doesn't have great stats though so shouldn't change things too much.

Warner is having a shocker. I don't think he's got into double figures and he's dropped catches.

Is there talk of Starc playing this one?

posted on 22/8/19

Not seen anything about Starc, reckon Pattinson is more likely to come in if anything.

Talk of England making changes to their batting line up... Buttler down to 7, Bairstow up to 6. Seems a bit pointless to me.

Yeah I don't see much point in that change. Denly & Roy should probably swap positions.

Always the scapegoat

Be pretty peeved if I were him, specially after that short leg catch

only change should be swapping Denly and Roy

Buttler 6 and Bairstow 7 is fine. What is the point in swapping that around.

Absolutely glorious in London, for some reason just assumed it would be alright up north. Just checked the forecast and there is rain about until 4pm!

Facks sake, I didn't check either. Sighhhhhh. If the test where Smith is absent is lost to rain, then... well, that'd be two consecutive tests where weather has probably cost England the chance of victory. That'd be a lame way for the Ashes to potentially be decided.

Though I've just checked the Met Office 5-day forecast for Headingley and it seems fine after this afternoon, so IGNORE ME OKAY

posted on 22/8/19

Well well, they're doing the toss in 10 minutes and starting at 11:20 if the rain doesn't fall again. At least they're not waiting 30 minutes to start play after the toss. Finally a bit of common sense.

Don't think England will mind bowling 1st and applying the pressure to their batsmen.
