Root is aiming to bowl Archer for half the overshe is clueless as a captain but probably the only batsman who is guaranteed a place so not sure who can take over.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So these rain breaks fit into his plans as every time the game restarts Archer has had a rest so can get the ball again.

Barring rain we still have an evening session.

Let’s get stuck into them after tea and have them 6 down at the close.

Haha, Tea Break must be seriously required.

It's raining anyway, day 1 looks a write off

What is the real reason Archer's speed has dropped, not having this conditions buisness
----------------------------------------------------------------------
From the sounds of things he's bowling slower to get some movement out of the new ball. Makes you wonder why Woakes wasn't used instead so Jofra could be used properly, i.e. bowling fast and aggressive.

I get the idea behind making the most of his fear factor while it lasts, but if they misuse him then the fear factor will vanish in no time flat.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes if he can bowl at 96mph that's what he should be doing, cant remember Lilley and Thompson ever reducing there speed what ever the conditions

To be fair to Root, the breaks mean he can bowl Archer more than usual. He's only bowled 9 overs in 4 hours, hardly going to cause him to break down.

Headingly doesn't get tests very often let's hope it'll be a long time till the next. After this is rainy Manchester then dreary Oval so England winning two games to wrest the Ashes back seems a tough task.

The way Root uses Woakes diminishes his chances to take wickets and I'm convinced Root undervalues his bowling. In ODI games Morgan shows Woakes he values him and this raises his performance.
Root has no man management skills whatsoever.

If England were 50 odd for 2 with the bat at this stage I'd fancy them to win this test. If the Aussies score 300 then I can't see us winning this game.

Yup, Aussies are well on top. If they get 300 they win the match.

Crikey, normally I'm the miserable one in here

Good over by Woakes 16 off it, the ball is swinging round corners and difficult to control.

We were 9-2 in the last test and could’ve won that. Stop being so pessimistic

Don't see anything other than an australia win from here. Our team are weak and rarely capable of fighting back to win a test.

The ashes will be gone before September

Just being realistic mate, England haven't shown me much over the past few years to convince me they can win a game batting second when the opposition puts a decent score on the board.

If we were batting now and 80 odd for 2 then we'd be favourites definitely.

Warner has been genuinely beaten about 20 times the lucky cheating cant.

Sorry by Root is not captain material. He could send a glass-eye to sleep.

You really must have a third man with this swinging ball. The run rate is rising rapidly even when the batters are edging the ball.
