The biggest problem with the internet and fake news is there are people who abuse their power to silence others in debate.

There is probably a truth to this. You can see that with the anti climate change lobby who try to discredit and smear any scientists who try to indicate that global warming is a product of human activities. The denigration of Greta Thunberg was particularly unsavory.

Fake news means a journo doesn't have to do real research and toil for ages to pit together a story that will make people want to read it.

All they need is a creative imaginative mind and five minutes behind a keyboard and voila, a news article is born.
