Initial thoughts:
Bairstow shouldn't be in the team since he averages about 25 in the last 2 years including 20 innings of 20 or under. Yet because he's one of the teacher's pets of the ECB, he's undroppable.
No idea what Moeen has done to justify his place. Not good enough with bat or ball. An all-rounder should be able to justify his place as a specialist in either discipline, and he can't justify either. Leach should've kept his place.
Relatively happy with the seamers but it's all a bit one-paced as usual, leaving Stokes to play the enforcer role, which he's not very good at since he's not quite quick enough. Personally I would've wanted to see one of Stone/Archer in for their genuine pace (probably Stone since he did nothing wrong against Ireland and Archer isn't fully fit anyway), or at least Curran for a bit of left-arm variation. That said, I'm not sure who I'd have dropped since Broad and Woakes both look in decent nick. No doubt Stones, Archer and Curran will all play a part in later tests though.
Fingers crossed one or two of our top 4 can scrape together some form. If they can, we'll win the Ashes. Much more likely we'll see England 3 down for under 50 as usual. I think if Burns, Denly and (to a lesser degree) Roy fail regularly throughout the series, then that will be the end of their test careers for the foreseeable (though I certainly don't see Burns or Roy being dropped any time soon due to lack of alternatives).
Either way I can already feel the familiar disappointment when the Aussie bowlers' extra 10mph of pace runs through our batting order like a hot knife through butter.
Fingers crossed, eh.
The christian name of 6 of Englands starting 11 begins with the letter J.
What should we read into this?
No Hazlewood or Starc for Australia. Siddle plays instead.
Normally I'd say that's a huge boost for England but Siddle has an annoyingly good Ashes record, and they still have Cummins and Pattinson... oh, and Lyon, who also has a great record against us.
There's already another live thread...
wtf was our national anthem all about!
Oh, didn't see that one. Why was it down below even the Ireland thread? It was created on 15 July ffs Bit keen.
Whatever. Close this one if people want, I don't really care. No point having 2 open
Smith please feck off cheaply
Desperate for a wicket before lunch.
Awful bowling just when we needed to go for the jugular. Stokes should be dragged off and Anderson brought on.
Poor captaincy from Root. Momentum gone and Australia buzzing for a big score.
Anderson definitely injured. Vaughan has just called it - still got a strained calf that is not up to bowling in a test match.
At the game. Poor from root taking off Anderson and broad so early. Woakes bowled well but too early for moeen and stokes.

Anderson's injured Phenom, keep up
Literally none of these aussies can bat in England apart from Smith. Having Wade as a specialist batter says it all.
Is this Ashes series going to be a case of which batting line up can collapse in the least apocalyptic way?
Jesus umpires having a shocker.
Gents, turns out there's already an Ashes thread buried further down the cricket board - maybe best to post in there instead
I dunno if Admin can close this one or whatever
Why doesn't Broad play ODI?
Don't think his body is up to the extra games. Plus he can have long periods of looking as threatening as a facking dormouse. And he wouldn't be able to nibble the white ball around like he can the Dukes, so he'd get tonked cos he's not quick either. Not one of our best options in ODI cricket.
