Greetings from Tofino, Vancouver Island. This is an incredible part of the world. A couple of days ago I was kayaking around one of the islands in the Johnstone Strait and a humpback whale surfaced without warning a few yards from me. I smelled his fishy breath. He snorted very loudly as cleared his blow hole. I don’t really speak whale but I’m pretty sure he was chanting “Philip Cocu’s black and white army”. Some groups of orca also passed us by in their DCFC colours. Our guide dropped a hydrophone into the water and we could clearly hear them singing to each other. A bald eagle plucked a fish from the sea right in front of us, returned to its perch on a giant fir at the water’s edge and gazed contemptuously down at us.

Omens all, surely. Tomorrow we will attempt to stream the game. I don’t think defeat would take anything away from the fabulousness of the surroundings but a win would make it extra magical.

Omens, we haven't lost our opening game since 2008. Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the last time we played our opening game on Monday was 2013, the season ended in the last minute at Wembley. A slightly different ending would be OK in my books.

we Have never started a season on a Monday night

last time we lost 1st game was against Doncaster 1-0
