Winterburn, Pearce?

Good players, not top 5 for me.

Hutton?

Mind you winterburn scored one of the best goals i've seen live the w@nker

Think Pearce had too much of his beat pre-PL for him to be in this top 5. However, definitely worth considering.

Liverpool currently have the two best fullbacks at the moment so as a big United fan that really hurts me to type.

What team does everyone support and what hurts them to type because of this. Get in touch via the unusual methods.

Cole & Neville probably but Cole is the standout. Think he would be even more effective if he was playing in the current era.

Everything hurts to type, due to years of rage typing leaving my fingertips bloody stumps.
Arsenal fan.

irwin > neville

Only been a couple of seasons but Robertson performance wise is as good as any mentioned.

Irwin was quality, Neville solid but unspectacular..

Finnan was solid aye, Zab had a fair few seasons at City?

You know what's really annoying? Overly one footed full backs. Usually left footed ones who literally cannot kick the ball with their weaker foot. You are a professional footballer. Learn to use your other foot just a little bit. I don't sit at my desk with one hand tied behind my back switching between mouse and keyboard with my strong hand. Booooooooooooooooooo

Rob Jones was brilliant, such a shame he was broken, though Finnan was pretty good too.

Also, John Arne Riise, didn't do too bad!
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Andy Robertson better than all of them - comfortably in my view.

OP, it is not that straightforward to rate him like that.
He has more guile than Cole. If you watch him, he know when to give away a tactical foul to stop opposition attack. Azpi also has the ability to link up with attack with balls behind the defense, the way Alderwereild does. I haven't seen many defenders, specially full backs do that. For me, he edges out Cole based on these alone.

Wow, never knew you rated Rob Jones, Finnan and Riise so highly.

Love moreSpurs attempts to reinvent himself as an ex-pro footballer. Looking forward to seeing how it progresses,

Neville and Cole for me.

Irwin and Azpi unlucky not to be included.

Robertson.

Are people assuming that a successful team means a fullback must be superior? That’s weird logic.

Alls I know is that Robertson is arguably the best full back on the continent right now - and you could argue that only Ashley Cole could lay claim to such a title out of the others listed.

Not sure why your laughing, as metro (who’s biased) states he’s up there with the best in the world at the mo. Which I (non biased) agree with, performance wise he’s probably better than the likes of cult hero evra was at any point. Which is infuriating seeing we could have bought him for peanuts.

Leaving aside the various flaws of such a claim, that is largely irrelevant - mainly because sometimes play in an era where their peers are not as strong as in previous generations.

Take England, for example.

Far easier to be regarded as England's best player now than it was 15-20 years ago.

This should be about the players, not about the generation they fall in.

I'm laughing because he has played one full Premier League season and this article is a debate about the best full backs ever in the PL era.

His name shouldn't be mentioned.
