Fewer and fewer people seem to know the difference between less and fewer these days, but what the hey.

No Bird, Knight or Whittaker for the U23s tonight I notice, though Sibley played. So maybe a couple of those on the bench. May as well be all three and leave out Dowell who clearly is not in Cocu’s plans. Rumoured that Paterson’s loan spell won’t go beyond January, I think he’s been pretty decent but if we have someone better lined up that’s fine by me.

Scott Sinclair rumour has opened up again on the back of the Paterson article.

A maaaaaaasive long shot but with Bowen's contract up at the end of the season and Hull would want to cash in on him we should at least look to be in the market for him. Throw in Zoom, Anya, Bennett and whatever else we can , the opportunity of playing with Rooney and a release clause of £7 million if we're not promoted. Gotta attempt to get someone of his quality into the club

Sinclair deal on the last deadline day was supposedly a swap deal with Lowe. Certainly we have plenty of left backs with Lowe, Malone, Buchanan and now Forsyth fit again. Lowe has done well but maybe Cocu sees more potential In Buchanan and would be prepared to let Max go in return for more quality wide.

Bowen yes all day long but I fear bottom end prem clubs will come knocking.

Not sure I'd risk letting Lowe go Vidal. Malone is injury prone , Buchanan too raw for this level, Forsyth unfortunately a horrible tackle away from being broken. Gotta keep Lowe. Similar to Bowen , Sinclair's contract comes to an end so Celtic would want to cash in and he's down as 4th choice.

Cocu talked recently of how he sees the players progressing into the first team if they are good enough. He said that in the first season they might get a Carabao Cup game and perhaps sit on the bench a few times in Championship matches. If they do well then in the second season they might play 10-15 games or so, perhaps coming in and out of the side if performance dips. He said it’s hard for young players to play consistently week in and week out to the required level. In the third season, again depending on progress, they might become the first choice in their positions. Obviously there would be exceptions: players with great ability or maturity might skip the second season for example.

So If Buchanan is one of those, then he is in season one at the moment. The target for him might be to be first choice in 2021-2022. So how does he get beyond where he is now? There is Malone and Lowe in the way so to even get on the bench he has to displace one of those. It’s hard to do that if you are only playing at under 23 level. Morris has long talked of unblocking the progress of Academy players to the first team.

I don’t know Malone’s contract but maybe it runs to the end of next season. You might envisage a situation where next season, Malone is first choice and Buchanan the apprentice, playing a few games and gaining experience with the aim of becoming the regular choice the season after. If Lowe is here then that doesn’t happen. Unless there are injuries of course.

I’m not advocating selling Lowe but I just wonder if this is how Cocu thinks about things. Maybe Malone could be sold but he is probably on good money. I don’t know which of them Cocu thinks is the better player, I suspect he thinks Malone. We always worry about injuries but you can’t carry a bloated squad of three or four players for every position. A player like Wisdom could cover in an emergency as he has done before.

I'd just like to note that the removal of Fossie, Bird, Knight and Whitaker weakened the U23's such that they lost 4-1 to Leicester.

Quick question for all, Scott Sinclair or Patrick Roberts?

I really liked the look of Roberts when he played for Fulham - the season we smashed them 5-1 at home, he was their best player, never gave up. Made a mistake joining Man City and is currently on loan at Norwich. Sinclair, if he did decide to come to us instead of a better lifestyle of living in say 'Merica could well be a great signing for us but it's the 'age old' problem - we sign 30+ year olds and then can't shift them. Roberts, younger and decent at Championship level.

Are there any promising wingers in the academy if there is why not try them first then if that does not seem a good fit then look outside the club.

Agree and disagree. For Derby to be successful we need to be looking at signing players with a sell on value. Bang on about this club but Brentford have shown how it should be done.

We repeatedly go for the experienced head that has no resale value - Nugent, Davies, Huddlestone, Savage, Shackell just a few names that spring to mind. Need to find players in the 21 -23 year bracket that could ideally be sold on. Might say easier said than done but smaller clubs in Champ are doing just this.

Couldn’t agree more desi. I like Sinclair but we have been bitten too many times like this. I liked Johnson before he came and he sort of did a job for us at times but what a price we paid in transfer fee and wages. I really like Mitchell-Lawson and thought he might feature this year but it looks as though he will take another season or two to come through. Whittaker looks as though he is slightly ahead of him, maybe he will be in the first-team squad next season. He might even be on the bench tonight.

We even signed Shackell twice FFS!

Yes we are, and it's going to happen tonight. I predicted a loss but I've changed my mind.

I am in with Peeder tonight. I think we will earn a win. And Lowe had a greta game alongside Fossie.
