The thing is, defenders have a tough time with it because their job isn't as statistically pleasing. It isn't often you get a defender who literally raises the level of a team and not only doing that but winning the biggest club competition going.

Van Dijk has performed at a level for his role that arguably surpasses what others achieved in their given roles. As much as I don't like saying it, I do think he deserves it and it's fair to see other players recognised for significant contributions that aren't simply goals and assists.

Reason why defender won’t win it’s because they’re rarely headline grabbers. See last night Barca vs Atletico. Barca were second best but it took a moment of magic from Messi to rob them of all 3 points. Goals win games and Messi has done it better than anyone. VVD a brilliant player shouldn’t get the award as great as he’s been. If he does it’ll be because of voters fatigue.

Nobody is ever gonna brainwash me that what Van Dijk does is more difficult or more influential than what Messi does. It's not about defenders vs attackers. Messi was just better than him. I'd wager Barcelona would have struggled a lot more without Messi last season than Liverpool without Van Dijk. Even in a team with talented players like Barca, Messi is head, shoulders and waist above every other teammate (other than maybe Ter Stergen who is Barca's 2nd best player).

Defenders also win games.

I personally believe VVD deserves it. Superb player and I'd even go as far as to say he will be the best ever PL defender if he carries on how he is. The amount Liverpool paid for him was a steal.

And yes, it takes more footballing talent to be an attacker than a defender. So yes, attackers are better than defenders. If defenders were any more gifted as footballers, they wouldn't be defending in the first place.

Disagree.

Van Dijk only looks good because he is playing for a world class Liverpool team. Why did he not win titles at Southampton? Why has he not led Holland to international success? 2 clean sheets this season? Is he just not doing his job? Are the club still paying his wages?

You just have to watch Cool Runnings to understand really. I'd have the Jamaican driver above the Swiss brake man. As it takes way more talent to be the driver. Even Sanka was a brake man and he was an idiot.

I’d understand the argument if Messi scored 30 and got 10 assists. But the guy got outlandish results last year in a pretty crap Barca team. He was also the sole reason Liverpool didn’t smash Barca about 7-0 over two legs. If jordi alba or someone finished one of the chances he put on a plate in the second leg then they would have gone through.
