Decent article - as we keep saying, there are a couple of absolutely key positions that need resolving and it'll be fascinating to see how this moves us forward.
1,2 and 3 are pretty much the same
--------
no they aren't
There’s deffo been some positives - I always thought people who said we had a bottom half of the table squad were far off the mark. We have a good squad - the majority of it came second a couple of seasons ago.
It remains to be seen if the younger players are good enough and they might end up as good squad players for the next manager but they have looked good so far.
Probably the best thing Ole has done is getting the best out of Rashford. Looking good so far and he’s pretty much stepped up and saved our season.
Going out and making a decent signing will raise the spirits for your fans. Also will signal to the Ole out brigade that the board still believe in him so could unite the club a bit and add quality.
Ultimately I think he should get the same target as the other managers and in this season where our rivals have been worse than us it’s very much a fair one - get CL football and stay, don’t and leave.
A binary target if CL football would be nonsensical.
If it's felt that things are moving in the right direction and we finish one or two points away from 4th, the idea that it should mean an automatic sacking is ridiculous.
Another Ole in article...

This could be a season where finishing about the same level as last season but with a squad slightly refreshed is actually a success.
Williams is definatley up there as a highlight. The ring he made for the penalty against Norwich is an example of exactly what we have been missing in our full backs. If he continues on the path we will have an Evra level LB in a few years. Wish we could get AWB doing the same things

And even if it was the 5th best squad I would want a manager to try and get more out of it - plus there’s the Europa league which we are one of the favourites for.
The manager has to have targets.
Surely another positive is the big improvement in the likes of Fred and McTominay. Both have a long way to go to be top midfielders but they have made massive strides. Hopefully a CB can come in and improve massively alongside Maguire. Either Bailly or Tuanzebe
I don’t think Fred is that good tbh. He’s had a few decent games but has been awful plenty of times as well. McT is deffo the success story in midfield though I feel he wouldn’t be a starter in any SAF side as he’s a poor version of Fletcher

We don't have a bottom half of the league squad, but we don't have a squad (though first 11 is as good as others rivals) that is head and shoulders the 3rd or 4th best in the league. We are about where we are at the minute as a squad.
As Gary Neville said after Jose was sacked, the club needed a reset a rebuild, we needed to reassess were we are at the moment, that includes short term targets.
I wonder how much of a role Pogba is gonna play in the second half of the season
Have a suspicion he’s just seeing the season out before he goes and post-surgery he’s gonna have niggles here and niggles there and barely play for whatever reason he sees fit. I would have so much more respect for Ole if behind the scenes he’s told Pogba he doesn’t want him in the side and there’s a tacit understanding between player and manager to keep up appearances until he goes

Liverpool, City, Spurs and Leicester all have better squads, you'd probably say going into the season we were on a par with Arsenal and Chelsea, Arsenal with the better attackers, Chelsea the better midfield. Supposedly we'd have a better defence but that hasn't been the case so far

He spent more than any other PL manager this past summer and still might spend another £50 million this window so he will have less excuses than others - plus two of our main rivals have sacked their managers so he’s been given a couple of extra boosts in his race for CL football as others have fallen away
I understand why people thinking if for example we came 5th on goal difference and the football was amazing that it would be unfair and I guess I would have to revise my opinion if that happened - but like I said, it all depends on the contract he signed and just how good the football would have been to get to that point

That's what we don't know. If those are the targets set out by his contract, then he can have no complaints about getting sacked. My point however is, sacking Ole because for missing out on top 4 doesn't seem to be consistent with, or to the benefit of a long term approach

Our star is still sufficiently bright that another season outside of the CL won’t hurt us in terms of competing financially.

I must admit I don't mind Fred firing balls into the more advanced players. Sometimes that's the only way to get it through. I think the fact they don't come off is more down to a lack of technical ability in our No10 (especially when it's Lingard). If we sign Fernandes perhaps that'll improve but if we can get a ball into our AM/No10 on the half turn that opens up a lot of possibilities with the pace we have up front.

What you’re arguing is irrelevant though
The debate is squad strength and more money was invested in this squad than any other side this summer - plus another £50 million might be added to that this week
Doesn’t mean it’s guaranteed success but I’m sure the expectation was to get CL football which should be the minimum target of every United manager - especially with how much money the club loses without it this season

With the club themselves having targets of CL football with massive financial penalties for not getting it I’d imagine it’s very important and it really depends what Ole agreed with the club in his contract as a target
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's what we don't know. If those are the targets set out by his contract, then he can have no complaints about getting sacked. My point however is, sacking Ole because for missing out on top 4 doesn't seem to be consistent with, or to the benefit of a long term approach

Ultimately I think he should get the same target as the other managers and in this season where our rivals have been worse than us it’s very much a fair one - get CL football and stay, don’t and leave.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Has that target ultimately handicapped our progress though Robb? We all want to be in the CL, but why should that be the bench mark for keeping his job?
We don't have a bottom half of the league squad, but we don't have a squad (though first 11 is as good as others rivals) that is head and shoulders the 3rd or 4th best in the league. We are about where we are at the minute as a squad.
As Gary Neville said after Jose was sacked, the club needed a reset a rebuild, we needed to reassess were we are at the moment, that includes short term targets.

*More was spent on his behalf than on any other PL manager this past summer...
Don’t how how many times I have to say this: Football managers don’t spend money.
I don’t know one manager anywhere in world football - and give me a single example if you know one Robb - who negotiates and authorises transfer fees.

“Our rivals have been worse than us”
How about “We’ve been better than our rivals”
Our star is still sufficiently bright that another season outside of the CL won’t hurt us in terms of competing financially.

Surely another positive is the big improvement in the likes of Fred and McTominay. Both have a long way to go to be top midfielders but they have made massive strides. Hopefully a CB can come in and improve massively alongside Maguire. Either Bailly or Tuanzebe
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yep exactly one I missed there. Fred has been great, Don't believe he will be the answer long term though. McTominay has really stepped up as well. Would like to see both use the ball better if I'm being hyper critical
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah he does not have composure on the ball. His firing the balls into players constantly shows he just needs to calm down and get more composure. All round game has improved massively
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I must admit I don't mind Fred firing balls into the more advanced players.
