Tv licence decriminalisation

I'm happy with the licence and what the BBC provides.

As someone else has pointed out, if you compare the BBC with some of the absolute crap that gets served up by TV companies forced to make their own revenue, there's no comparison.

It'll just become another channel if we remove it and then it'll die. What a sad state of affairs that would be.

I pay a TV licence in Ireland, paid it in the Netherlands as well. I dont mind. But what irks me is that I have done away with all TV channels. I only have Netflix, Amazon, Disney+ and Apple TV. Yet I still have to pay the licence because I have a screen in the house, like a TV or Tablet.

That to me is the same as a mafia racket or extortion. I am not watching RTE ever. Why the fack do I have to pay the licence because I have a TV in the house? It facking infuriates me.

I am actually thinking if you take them to court over it, you might win.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Is that accurate?

Certainly in the UK, you're allowed to use screens - it's only when you use them to access live TV or to stream BBC programs that you require the license, as I understand it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Correct

You don't need a license to watch non - live services. But even in these cases people get taken to court if their equipment could be used to watch live TV.

Utter con, needs to be abolished

Yeah we don't pay for a screen in our house here in the UK. We have to have a tv licence to watch any live television from any source on any device.

So if you're streaming a live football game online from abroad and watching it on your tablet or phone then legally you need a tv licence.

Paying for a screen in your house is absurd though. Wouldn't be surprised if they try and bring that in here when more people inevitably stop watching freeview tv.

I rented a flat a few years ago and when I moved in I already had a pay your licence letter, and a warning we will send people round letter when I checked the postbox on the first day. That’s the only thing that annoys me, other than that I think the BBC is very good.

That's fine but then the BBC should make it possible for people like yourself to pay £150 per year to just watch the four BBC Channels while others like myself can watch all the other channels on freeview for free as they are.

The BBC pro some of the best programmes available, radio to suit all tastes, more or less unbiased news reports from around the world.
If t was no BBC we would all end up paying a subscription a la Sky.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not necessarily at all. The non BBC channels on freeview tv are free to watch. The only channels we're paying for are the BBC channels.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Not sure how many times you need to be told that some of the licence fee goes to other free view channels.

You also have issues such as the BBC pay towards transmission costs etc. If the BBC goes then cost for other channels will increase. If the BBC starts having advertisements due to no licence fee, then sale of advertising would change, prices would likely fall which would again decrease the amount of revenue other channels take.

Won't be long till you have to pay a subscription for all those channels if the licence fee goes.

And you can back all this info up I'm sure. Exactly how much money goes to other freeview channels ? And which channels ?

From the tv licence website:

"Over 90% of the licence fee is spent on BBC TV channels, radio stations, BBC iPlayer and online services. Part of the fee also contributes to the UK broadband rollout, funding local TV channels and S4C, the Welsh language TV channel, as was agreed with the government as part of the 2010 licence fee settlement".

https://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/check-if-you-need-one/topics/what-does-your-licence-fee-pay-for-top13

Nothing there about other mainstream freeview channels getting a share of the tv licence revenue.

It's quite funny that in just a few years, we will all be renting flats from rich over 75s who own all of the property, and paying TV licenses for having a TV to watch netflix on, whilst they sit in their mansions watching Eastenders, exempt from paying the TV license because it wouldn't be fair to make them pay for it.

It's quite simple, people who don't watch BBC channels should have the option of not having to pay £150 per year tv licence, over 90% of which goes to the BBC.

A licence to watch all the non BBC channels available on freeview would at most cost a small fraction of the current BBC tv licence fee.

So you never watch the BBC, never visit the web site or use any of their services? Ever?

I don't believe you.

Never understand people moaning about the TV license. I think it's tremendous value.

Not one complaint from the OP about Sky who charge something approaching 10 times the annual TV license every month to watch TV with adverts every 15 mins. I'm not sure how Sky get away with half the stuff they do. How can a company running a Sports news channel also run a sports betting firm for instance? Weird.

Nah, the BBC is good value for me - beyond the TV channels it also pays for the radio and online content, both of which I personally use every day.

Got carried away there and mixed it up my words - Sky charging something approaching the annual licence fee every month is nearer the mark.

I watch very little BBC when I watch Freeview, a tiny amount in fact that I could very happily live without if it meant not being forced to pay up to £150 per year to the BBC.

Also, as your own post pointed out, Superb - the licence is to operate the equipment not pay for the BBC. The fact that "over 90% of the license goes to the BBC" is neither here nor there really.

posted on 5/2/20

Actually, I'm more curious where the other ~10% goes.
