Where is the recent City side?

Looking at Villa, I think they won one European Cupand one title, equalling 9 points, whereas City have two titles, and three cups, given them 17. Unless I've missed something?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

It was about the greatest ever English sides, which would immediately exclude Man C.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Do some research and find out who was the last all English team to win the top title

not really a lazy argument though is it.
like i say, not wanting to take anything away from liverpool and what the achieved during that period, but for me it is much harder to win now.

you have to play more games to win the competition, and you are looking at 3 or 4 top teams from each major country, not just one.
i dont understand how people can not see how that makes it harder to win.

last season is a prime example.

you win the CL after finishing 4th the season before.
the competition is much vaster nowadays
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes you play more games but in this format you can draw/lose a couple and still win it. The old format lose and you’re out.

Also 3/4 top teams per country. Are you sure?

Spain's big 2 have basically dominated the CL for the past 8 years or so. Dunc's comment is redundant.

If we went back to the old format, how many European cups would be taken away from England in the last 30 years?

Go on, have a go.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
probably most, and that only validates my point... more teams are capable of winning it

On this criteria, If this was looked at over the 15 year period, Chelsea would be on well over 50 pts

Not sure too many others would top that...yeah some money was spent in doing it to be fair...

That's not true. In the old format you could lose almost half your games and still win it. You could draw all of your games and still win it. This hasn't changed.

That Liverpool side 75/6, 76/7 were boring lumping it to Toshack for knock downs for Keegan.

Much better when KKK came in and got rid of donkey

posted on 25/2/20

Welsh

Yeah you could lose/draw one leg of each round and win the other. I’d say that’s harder than losing/drawing the first 3/4 group games and picking up form later on and still going through.

Liverpool are clearly the best team in the league and have already won the title, so there really isn't any reason they don't win another piece of silverware too, and they would need to if they want to be declared the greatest English side of all time.

We’ve established that most teams wouldn’t have won it. That’s the point.

by this I mean 2005 to now

By my quick reckoning the best 15(ish) year periods for English team success are

Liverpool 76-92 91 pts
Man Utd 92-07 63 pts
Chelsea 04-20 56 pts

doesn't include Charity Shields Euro Super Cups or World Club Championships (2 team/4 team playoffs)

When Liverpool won European Cups they had byes to te final.

In the late 70s and early 80s, Spanish and Italian football was at all time low

German sides were decent

1981, LIverpool played Oulun Palloseura, Aberdeen and CSKA Sofia to reach semis

1985 Lech Posnan, Benfica, Austria Vienna and Panathaniakos to reach final

Yeah, sounds easy.
Makes you wonder why so many other clubs weren't winning European cups. 🤔
Ah, that's right, you had to win your domestic league to qualify. 😉

Fergie Aberdeen were the best Scottish club at the time. The time when Scottish clubs had a chance because they could compete financially which is impossible now and only limited to 2-3 leagues.

In those days everyone had a chance. Was a level playing field. Now it is a monopoly.
