Also, as to why we didn’t win it, you’ve explained that yourself; we went 26 years without winning the league.
By the time we got back into the competition the format had changed.
I suspect Everton would’ve won one with their side that wasn’t allowed to compete.
Equally, I suspect the Babes would’ve gone on to win a few but for disaster.
Naturally those last two points are conjecture, but it just so happened to be a softer competition at the time Liverpool found themselves at the top of the English game.

In the old format, lose one tie and that's it.
——
Sure, but back then your route to the final was
1977
Crusaders
Trabzonspor
St Etienne
FC Zurich
1978
Bye
Dresden
Benfica
Monchengladbach
1981
Oulun Palloseura
Aberdeen
CSKA Sofia
Bayern Munich
Disingenuous to say that competition was harder to win.

Wow I didn’t realise there was that few games needed to win it. Explains why Madrid picked up about 5 or 6 so early on.

Definitely. That Everton side was before my time but there are a few Evertonian’s in my family that always swear blind they would have won a couple had they been allowed to compete.

Madrid won a few EC when English teams didn't even compete in it. I think only a handful of clubs played in it then but people over look it when talking about their EC wins

Yea I feel their haul of 13 is padded up with about 5 wins that shouldn’t really count.
That’s why there’s a very valid argument for drawing a distinction between the European Cup and the Champions League.
Two very different competitions.

Don’t let that Bayern Munich appearance sway you either. The following year they were beaten comfortably in the final by Aston Villa.
The only thing that happened is that the bunch of so called media experts give us finally the recognition for how difficult it is to go unbeaten through a season.
I personally give a monkey if Liverpool would have achieve that this season (I thought they will get there). They are comfortable in the table nonetheless since December and will win the PL title.
Still had to beat the teams in front of us. If it was so easy then you'd think more teams would have six European Cups.

There’s no desperation. Just drawing the distinction between the quality of the two tournaments.
If it was easy to win Arsenal, Leeds, Spurs and other clubs who have won the league would have won also more European cups.
Those so called minor teams in those days were proper tough teams. You could only have 3 foreign players in each team and basically we played the national team of each county.
We have reached 4 Champion league finals in the last 20 years. Man United in their dominant period have the same. We have always been better in Europe than any English team.
I think it was harder to get in but easier to win pre CL days.
These days, the seeding system is effectively enabling UEFA to ensure that the majority of the big names qualify through to the latter rounds, so I think it's a harder competition to win now.
