I can't see any way whatsoever that the PL can order players to remain with their workplace if they are out of contract.
It's like the government telling you that you can't leave your employer.
Legal minefield which will be rightly challenged by players and clubs alike.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Seems like it's going to be a FIFA order.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Is it?
Does it cover Belgium who have finished their league as well? Are Belgian clubs going to be instructed they can't transfer players between their clubs? Or make an exception for them?
Nope, don't see it.

I have lots of football bets that could net me a tidy sum, if the season finishes. So it is not really in my interest for the league not to finish. But realistically it is the only way forward. At least I will still get my original stakes back, as being void bets.

Nah lots of bets on the lower leagues, WBA to win the championship at 10/1, Coventry to win League 2 at 25/1, Swindon to win League 2 at 15/1, just as examples. There are others, mostly small bets, but in multiples they come to a few quid.
Only bets I had on the Prem were Spurs and United for top Four. Brighton and West Ham to get relegated. All four bets were still very much alive.

But the reason why everyone's struggling to find a solution is because they're so wedded to having a full, complete calendar next season. Scrap that and everything gets a lot easier.

Yeah, I think FIFA holds player registrations around the world. They can exclude any player from appearing in all the competitions under FIFA (which is all of them) the leagues, cups etc.
If they tell a player that new registrations are not possible at this time then what can the player do? This means they can leave the club but can't join a new one. I guess that's why they're telling then to stay with their clubs.

I predict that when it comes to the crunch in a strange twist of fate United will help Liverpool to win the PL (which they do deserve to be fair).
I just can't see a way United will just accept voiding the season as there's still the change of CL qualification. Maybe some fans would like that to happen but I don't think the OT bean counters will see it like that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah this, utd have a great chance of top 4/5
I say top 4/5 given cities potential ban
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I won't lie to you. It would be quite funny as a United fan seeing Liverpool not win the PL. I can't deny that. I also can't deny you've been the best team by far this season and that it would be incredibly harsh if that happens.
However, I do want United to do as well as they can and CL qualification is key to that. If that happens, and we sign a few more really good players, then I think we could be in a good position to compete as next season will be a complete unknown as we don't know how this situation will have affected everyone.
In any case football is very much secondary at the moment anyway and I wish everyone well at this difficult time.
A month or so ago I was furious when people mentioned suspending matches for a few weeks but I quickly realised that football isn’t relevant given what’s going on.
As a Liverpool fan I will stick my neck out and say I speak for every other red when I say we don’t want to win the league via a meeting or mutual consent between all the clubs or behind closed doors - we want to be there or watch it unfold and see the army of fans celebrate like it’s been 30 years since we last won it.
As for people saying void it but also make sure next season isn’t affected- what utter nonsense.
Next season cannot start until this season has finished. Whether that’s in May, August, December I don’t know but you can’t start again without finishing this one
The bit about players being told to stay with their clubs until it finishes for me is a no brainer

And what's to stop the player and/or club challenging FIFA in the European courts a la Bosman for restriction of trade?
My opinion (I know) is that someone has wigged onto FIFA holding all player registrations; many leagues struggling to finish in a sensible time frame down to the uncertainty; thought about the player contract issue and found a "resolution" before spouting it out as if it is something that will happen.
In other words pure conjecture.

I for one am shocked at this
It's going to come down to the money, clubs stand to lose a fortune if the season doesn't finish as why would sky or bt etc. honour a contract that wasn't fulfilled?
All these shiny players we all live playing for our clubs are there because of the cash the clubs make predominantly from TV rights.

Exactly. Its not even baout UK TV money. its global. no product no payment.
Worse is the fact teams already got paid and have not delivered so this could end up being an injunction to deliver or refund and they won't have it to give.
It makes the clubs paying players look even worse. they are paying players with money that might be refunded to TV companies. Its lunacy
I wonder if the other leagues getting large players wage reductions the ones who don't get paid up front

FIFA make the rules for football. National employment law trumps this. For example the EU bosman ruling cannot be overturned by FIFA/UEFA .
If a players contract ends, it can only be extended by agreement. UEFA/FIFA might relax their registration rules to allow for very short term extensions.

I vote scrap it , give Liverpool the title , and just start again next season no CL no EL . International travel lockdown for a year . It's gonna be the only way to stop the spread .
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I vote to scrap it as well, say hard luck to Liverpool and move on.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
who would have guessed.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I have lots of football bets that could net me a tidy sum, if the season finishes. So it is not really in my interest for the league not to finish. But realistically it is the only way forward. At least I will still get my original stakes back, as being void bets.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
what bets would they be
let me guess one, that liverpool win the league
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Nah lots of bets on the lower leagues, WBA to win the championship at 10/1, Coventry to win League 2 at 25/1, Swindon to win League 2 at 15/1, just as examples. There are others, mostly small bets, but in multiples they come to a few quid.
Only bets I had on the Prem were Spurs and United for top Four. Brighton and West Ham to get relegated. All four bets were still very much alive.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Coventry to win League 1 at 25/1

Personally, I've thought for ages that the talk has been around scrapping the wrong season. 20/21 should be scrapped. The current season should be ended when we can, the Euros would be in the summer, the World Cup the year after that so there would need to be some padding in the 21/22 season anyway. Aim to finish this season by around March or April next year, along with cups and European competitions, have the Euros a bit earlier in the year than usual. Any gap you have before that, you can fill with a bespoke, one-off competition of whatever length you want. The Covid-19 Cup (2021).
But the reason why everyone's struggling to find a solution is because they're so wedded to having a full, complete calendar next season. Scrap that and everything gets a lot easier.

Hey, if FIFA do this then I just see all sorts of legal challenges.

Its lunacy
I wonder if the other leagues getting large players wage reductions the ones who don't get paid up front

which will have no legal standing whatsoever.
FIFA make the rules for football. National employment law trumps this. For example the EU bosman ruling cannot be overturned by FIFA/UEFA .
If a players contract ends, it can only be extended by agreement. UEFA/FIFA might relax their registration rules to allow for very short term extensions.

Yeah because all clubs can easily afford to scrap a whole season and do without a whole years income
Same for SKy, BT and every other business associated with football.
You re seriously suggesting foregoing a whole season is preferable to failing to finishing one that is 75% complete
