Just like the January window, I don’t see why people try to over complicate simplistic scenarios.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Because it’s not simplistic. If it was there wouldn’t be so many difficulties with trying to complete the season.
Presumably, the idea of extending contracts, is so that the seasons can be finished with the current squads. But this may not be possible, and makes a mockery of the season if a club has to finish it with different players.

That is literally the possibility every season because of the January transfer window. Does that mean that every season since it was introduced is a "mockery"?
January window is a mandated transfer window in the middle of the season. Not really the same as changing the squad with ten games to play, with the possibility of it being quite a radical change due to the expiration of contracts.
Imagine players will be able to move upon expiry of their contracts however they won’t be able to register to play for their new club until the current season is completed.
Simple solution is a player agrees a pre-contract to move to their new club at the end of the current season, whilst agreeing a short term extension with their current club until the season ends.
Ensures the player continues to play (and be paid) until the end of the season whilst having the security of a contract with their new club already sorted (particularly important in the event they get injured)
Means their current club don’t lose a player before the season ends whilst the purchasing club isn’t stuck paying a player who isn’t eligible to play for them for the next 6 months or so.
Seems a scenario that would suit all parties.

It's not that different. There is no limit on the number of transfers allowed to happen in the january transfer window. Changing members of your squad is established within the game.

Well unfortunately this is the situation we are in
Of course it’s massively different. You don’t have as many players transferring in January as you do in the summer as contracts don’t end in January.
The differences in the make up of a squad are marginal by comparison. In the event that it ends up playing out as discussed, you may see teams changing half their squad to finish the last ten games.
Unlikely for most premier league clubs, but certainly a reality for a lot of financially weaker clubs that see a far higher turnover of players in a summer window. Comparing it to the January transfer window is idiotic.
Ok so what’s your suggestion

Is it possible for a club to change half their team in the january transfer window? If it is then it's no different there is absolutely no restriction on a team finishing the season with a different squad than they started the season with.

The big difference is this is unplanned. Teams will have players on contracts for this season, loans etc, all done on a budget from July 1st 2019 to June 30th 2020. You dont get players contracts ending in January usually.
I looked at Swindon and they have 21 players out of contract on June 30th. That is very different to January.
The top leagues wont have that much of an issue, I'm sure. But you cant just dismiss the rest.
And there’s clearly a difference when you consider that there is a restriction on finishing the season with a different group of players with ten games to go. That’s why we even have a transfer window.

Why? All those players will have the option of an extended contract. If they choose not to accept it then it frees up a space and their wage for Swindon to get a replacement in. Precisely as they would have done if it happened in a normal season.
Sure there are going to be financial difficulties for some clubs, but those difficulties are going to be there anyway and not extending the season is likely to compound them because it means even less income than if the season continues.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Is it possible for a club to change half their team in the january transfer window? If it is then it's no different there is absolutely no restriction on a team finishing the season with a different squad than they started the season with.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The big difference is this is unplanned.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You can get in players on less wages than the players you already have.
You can also reduce the number of players you have.
But not if you are forced to extend contracts a few months.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Where are you getting that they will be forced to extend contracts? The link in the op says they will be able to extend.
