Had a Packard bell some years back lasted about 3-4 years, then got another but if fecked up after about 2 days, son let’s me use his MacBook Pro he’s had for donkeys, still works fine, never spent a penny on any antivirus for it

I got this one a few weeks back. Although it was on offer at the time - think I paid £499.
It is very fast. It has 8GB RAM and 16GB Intel Optane. I have no idea what that means, but assume that it is some kind of boost that makes it so fast.
I don't think that the battery life is as good as they make out, but it is ok. My wife doesn't like the keyboard on it as the keys are silver and the letters/numbers are grey, so they aren't always easy to see in certain light/at certain angles. As s touch typer it doesn't really bother me, but worth mentioning.
I have two that I’ve had through work. Dell, which I hate, and a MacBook Air, which I love.
I suppose it depends what software you want to run. What do you use it for work?
The reason I use the Dell is for Microsoft software to do with work. Everything else, I use the Mac.
I've just realised I get 6% of all Argos products through my job too so I can pay £470 for the one in the OP.
Babyen, I just use our work portal online from time to time. Nothing drastic.
I’d recommend a mac then. Expensive, but last for ages. Mine is still as fast and keeps battery charge just as well as the day I got it about 4 years ago.
Having said that, I’m no IT expert, and maybe there are other non apple laptops just as good, but cheaper.
I can only go by my experience, and the mac is better than any other laptop I’ve used.
Also, if you have an iphone, that’s another reason to get a mac, you can switch between the both easily on the same task/browsing. Pretty sure you can do that with android phones and non Apple laptops these days too though.
I have never paid for any anti virus software in all the years I have had a computer. I use the AVG free version and have never had any problems. I have also heard paid for software like Norton can slow down your PC.
Whenever I have bought a new laptop, the first things I do is download AVG free and a couple of free anti spyware programs like Spybot and Superantispyware for emergency scans. I do a scan every few months just to keep things tickety boo.

yeah, right Billy we know why Those dodgy sites you go to
It's usually 'Adult' sites that load your PC/laptop with viruses and malware.
A small price to pay imo.
Before IPTV all my computer devices were full of viruses

yeah but nothing like an unwanted pop-up just before you finish

Have an Hp DV7 for 12 years other than the battery it works perfectly for the basic things. Macs are not the only computers that lasts.
Op, you may want top go for this HP instead. For the same price, it has a faster processor (2.1Ghz) and a touchscreen.

I always used sites such as the below to compare CPUs and GPUs.
https://www.anandtech.com/bench/cpu/2
Generally speaking AMD currently offer better performance for your buck compared to Intel. Though this might be different for laptops.
I would recommend looking at
https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/
I’ve been a member on there for over 10 years. Some extremely knowledgable people on there but as I said before. For your uses I doubt you would notice much difference. SSD, battery life, RAM & screen size & quality are priorities but ask the guys on that forum they’re very helpful.
I recently bought a Huawei Matebook D13, great mid range laptop, cost £500. Uses an AMD Ryzen 5 processor with 8gb ram and 500gb ssd. Build quality is as good as the Dell Latitude range and they cost over £1000.
The laptop itself the OP linked is ok but FFS do NOT install bloody Norton on it.
There is plenty of free AV/AM software out there all of which are far less intrusive than Norton

No disk drive on that either - Not used that often these days but still handy to have.
256Gb SSD, could be bigger.
Work recently got me a Dell XPS, not sure it's worth the money tbh.
