Another 90 coronavirus deaths have been reported in hospitals in England, the lowest daily increase since 25 March, taking the total to 24,617.

The use of the war metaphor has an insidious political aspect. It has certainly been used to underpin the whole 'scrutinising the government is inappropriate politicisation' narrative. It also introduces the idea of honourable human sacrifice: we can clap the heroes who stride into 'battle' with the virus (without PPE) and we shouldn't be appalled when large numbers die - after all, in a war you expect heroes to die, and it's the enemy's fault, not the state's.
I don't know, personally I'd be prepared to wash my hands and practice social distancing if the authorities simply told me that it was a matter of saving lives. I don't think people need to anthropomorphise the virus with martial metaphors to understand what the situation requires.

Red Russian, exactly! It’s just political nonsense. Us nhs workers, from cleaners to doctors are there to work and do a job to the best of our ability and in the safest possible way. We are not there to be “heroes” and sacrificed. We care about our patients but we also care about our individual health. We need the government to make good decisions and have good PPE. Without PPE and correct safety measures we can’t do our job.

Totally. Your actions have been heroic, but it's a disgrace that so many people have been put in that position. NHS workers, care home workers. Next in line: teachers.
There was another way to approach this. We had the advantage of forewarning and good and alarming examples to take heed of.
By the way, another disgrace is that the government will continue to force foreign NHS workers, who are not only putting their lives on the line and, like everyone else, paying through their taxes for the health service, to pay a surcharge to be allowed to access healthcare while in this country.

Nohlman, i hope this crisis has caused you to reevaluate your ‘every man for himself’ conservative views.
Many, many (in my experience, the majority) teachers are working in schools looking after children of key workers and vulnerable pupils.
I get the feeling some think that we are not working, and this is far from the truth.
Here in Wales there is no sign of when the schools will open. To be honest, most school leaders are busier than ever.

Tbf he has not forced any state too open.
All the states around hear have completely ignored him from day one and r doing things as we see fit.
If u ignore the idiocy that spews from his mouth, which most do, he has done not much different to most leaders around the world.

I dunno, didn’t he call it a hoax, deny it was even happening for valuable weeks? Before blatantly lying and trying to suggest he’d been all over it from the start?

This is overly simplistic.
We all put wealth before health every day.
If health was the only important factor then we’d all go into lockdown when the flu starts up each year.
