Reading the bbc text it looks like Burns made the call to run.
Honestly why would you do that 15 mins before lunch
----------------------------------------------------------------------
i really wouldnt believe that when you look at how both players play.
they're always trying to defend Root.

Captaincy does seem to have taken something away from his game. Problem is who could you give it too?
Stokes has enough on his plate, we don't want to burden him with it.
Buttler is probably a good choice as he's very calm and we're not overly reliant on his runs. However, he's barely justifying his place in the team as things stand.

Would be lucky to have any reviews left by the 5th over for each innings
Burns is genuinely the best candidate after Root. Been an excellent and successful skip for Surrey

Both players at fault then. Root should've told him no, the ball was behind point. Non-striker's call.

Surprised it's still 48 tbh
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He scored a big hundred in NZ and a few fifites in SA from memory without a big score. I think his form was okay and there's still a decent player in there. He's just not a talisman and hopefully Stokes' form with the bat can help score him a few more runs under the radar. If he can keep his average in the high 40s then that'd be useful for us if the other bats can put their hand up with runs.
Absolutely. It's just such a shame considering just HOW good he used to be. He was in that top 4 group with Smith, Kohli and Williamson on merit for a while
In fact you'd probably say he was a decent bit ahead of both Kohli and Williamson in tests for a while. He just dropped off while the others (Kohli especially) really stepped up a level

difference clearly being he cant lead and be at that level as a batsman like the others can
Yeah, you can't ague with that. The other 3 stepped up especially as captains where as Root has gone the other way and is now below other batsmen in the game and not just those 3.
I think there's still time for Root to get back to his best, even if he retains the captaincy. He needs to bat at 4 though. If that top 3 can become a solid platform for us for the next 2 or 3 years then hopefully he can find his best form again. Even if that's scoring fifties more regularly and not converting.
Oh well, Burns has looked mostly pretty good in that first session which is good news for him as he hasn't batted much since the Ashes.
we would have taken only 2 down at lunch right
Would be great if Burns could ton up.
Think we've finally found a solid opening partnership. Only really 3rd bat which is up for grabs now.
I wonder whether Root fancies sitting back and watching Ben Stokes bat for the afternoon rather than thinking about having to bat.

Would be really annoyed if he gets a batsman out
Both Burns and Sibley look the part but it's annoying they've yet to do it in the same innings. Always seems like one will get a score whilst the other will be out for <20.
Hopefully that'll change soon.

have to remember they have not been opening together long and big opening stands are so rare in the game now.
im sure we will see a few from these two in the coming years.
Stokes gone!
Decent bowling from Roach.
Obvious he wouldnt do much today with all the hype haha
Another poor batting performance from England
Every time we look to be settling down we lose a wicket. I reckon 250 all out
Pope and Buttler need runs.
Century please Burny boy
At least Pope will be used to coming out to bat with Burns at the crease. Hopefully the two Surrey lads can get England out of a little bit of a hole here.
