An example could be Wanyama. Physical but not technically great. Such players can do well in England, but would struggle in other leagues.

Fellaini is another one. Not black but brought to the league due to physicality. Teams in Spain wouldn't be interested in such a player.

You're right, there are white players with similar traits, but that doesn't explain why some teams go for African players when they could recruit english.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Might be again due to culture and scouting, I have spoken to a coach at arsenal who said they scouted for tall black players solely but would take what he says with a pinch of salt. The fact of the matter is most clubs want to be successful and will buy according to that. I believe the technical side of the pl has gone up, Atleast offensively and on the ball, the last 5 years or so and the % or black players also has. Also the physicality you could say has gone down in the pl. rarely do we bully teams on the continent anymore and we usually beat teams by the footy we play,
Maybe the two just are not linked.

Its from 2018 but here's the distance covered stats.

Maybe black Africans are lazy.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It doesn't state the average, so players who have played more minutes will obviously fare better.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think we can all agree, Eriksen being on that list is shocking.

Bernado Silva holds the record. I cba to search stats anymore but it would be no surprise to see the likes of Henderson and Milner up there with Kante. Bournemouth cover a mad amount of distance and I'm not sure if they have a single African in their squad.

It's bollox mate.

Because they're cheaper.

Im not trying to have a pop but Ive shown other leagues that refute your statement, players that refute your statement, stats that refute your statement and cultural connections that refute your statement.

Maradonna grew up playing with a fvcking orange. If anything it helps technique

This has been put to bed imo.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I was actually going to make that point of them being cheaper.

But you can't deny that some past managers have hired black players due to their stereotyping them as physical.

I don't care what past managers have done or what pundits say. Ron Atkinson's book opens with the line "Ive always admired the black player" or something I think.

I care about all the examples I've posted.

It's two years old.

I'm going to throw in Mahrez while we're at it.

Yeah, the influence of foreign managers has seen technical quality of the league improve. Even championship teams are trying to play football.

Go on most skills videos on youtube and half of them are of African lads playing with a slightly flat size five ball on a dirt pitch, half of them barefoot but all celebrating mad tricks. Like they go nuts at absolutely taking the p!ss where as it's considered a bit of an offence in Europe. Similar with beach football in South America.

I actually think European football has coached the life out of football to the point it's nearly boring. I love a bit of total unpredictability.

It's an entertainment sport.

Haha yeah he did. He caught got caught twice on microphone didn't he?

Sprinting was mentioned earlier. I think most have thought the same but then you read into the culture of sprinting in the West Indies and USA and then you see 90% of the finalists are from there. Then you see the opta stats and personally I realised it's just a trope. There is some science to support it, in swimming too, but it's not reflected in football.

But also big Ron had a handful of top class black players under him at West brom and probably knew what he was talking about - but he was old school and of that generation

Robbing, what do you make of the NFL & NBA, which have about 2/3 black players?

I dont know tbh but I'll try and about it at some point. A guess would be that the tallest races on Earth are from Africa, it's an American sport, slavery bred bigger slaves and basketball is a sport in which you have a massive advantage at if you're tall? Probably wrong, I don't know.

Why digress though? It doesn't validate what you said does it?

posted on 10/6/20

We've both digressed, the original topic was about managers.

I'll accept that the numbers of African players is due to price, but at the same time English teams won't have bought them if they didn't fit the physical nature of this league.

posted on 10/6/20

I think the physical differences argument is based on a myth and I think it is more to do with society - accessible sports in various sections of society.

South Africa’s divide between football and rugby is a great example.

I might be wrong but I think this is the primary reason.

With that in mind, we surely cannot think that this matter requires the same attention as the OP in this article.

Revealed today - number of black board members:

FA - 0 out of 11
UK Sport - 0 out of 10
Sport England - 2 out of 11

Added to the LTA, England and Wales Cricket, Rugby Union, Swim England, England Hockey, British Cycling, England Golf and British Horseracing having ZERO black board members, maybe we start to see a connection here?

So 2/32 i.e. 6% of board members are black?

Tennis
Cricket
RU
Swimming
Hockey
Cycling
Golf
Horse racing

Are these list of sports not really just a list of sports that are pretty much the exclusive domain of generational middle class people?

Are you conflating a class issue with a race issue?

posted on 11/6/20

yes

6% is relative to the population amount no?
