I’d imagine they’ll delete the blackface bits and restore the rest of it. Tbf, can anyone make a legitimate argument why the blackface stuff should be on there?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
How about it isn't blackface.
Blackface was a very specific thing. A white person donning makeup so that they can act as a black person is not a problem imo the same as a black person doing it to be white isn't.
The problem with blackface is that it was people sticking ridiculous makeup on that emphasised racist stereotypes and then prancing around to suggest black people were inferior. If you aren't doing that and your character is just black then it's not an issue for me. It's only through association with traditional blackface that modern dressing up is seen as bad. And that makes no sense for me.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
You’re the one solidifying your prejudices by categorising what is and what isn’t blackface.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Last week you were categorising what is and what isnt apartheid.
You're strict and literal in your interpretation when it suits.
The guy was educating you.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He was incorrectly trying to define apartheid and use it in a debate where it was wholly inappropriate. And I took great pleasure in explaining to that poster why saying ‘apartheid’ was hideously off the mark.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Well definitions are changeable and are kind of my point. It WAS the traditional minstrel show style thing which was obviously a caricature. Some of the acts were called almost comically offensive names using words like "darky" ffs.
Now the term is used for any white person wearing black makeup. So if a white person went to a fancy dress party as Michael Jackson that is included and is called racist. I don't think it is. For me the colour of someone's skin is just like the colour of their hair. So putting black makeup on is the same as putting a wig on. Unless it is specifically done to be racist in the process and then we are back to the tradifional blackface.
Basically the way I see it is when I watch an old film or TV show that clearly has racist elements to it, I see it for what it was ‘acceptable at the time and not acceptable now’ I cannot enforce my modern standards on some art form from the past?
When I moved down to London at 18 for uni I got called Norvun Monkey all the time and I replied in kind with Southern Fairy. I wonder if that is acceptable still?

No, I get that. But ultimately it’s not really about how you feel when you say you feel it isn’t racist. If black people (as they do) feel offended by someone blacking up on a mainstream tv show then they should be able to make that decision.

You can't give one group ultimate decision making powers on any issue that is why we have the problems in the first place. Society as a whole needs to decide what is offensive.
I'm not sure all black people feel the way you say they do either (can any group of people that large all agree on anything?) So who do we listen to then. Plus even if all black people did then I still need it justified. You can't turn around and say that is offensive and that is sufficient to reduce other people's freedom (another example of what happened historically).
I bet lots of black people didn't have a problem with Jimmy Fallon in black makeup that time. I bet every black person (and most white people) would be appalled by traditional blackface.
There's just no nuance anymore!

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Jesus

"I'm so right that I'm not even going to debate back I'll just patronize the other person."
And we wonder why there is no change and people solidify their prejudices.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You’re the one solidifying your prejudices by categorising what is and what isn’t blackface.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Last week you were categorising what is and what isnt apartheid.
You're strict and literal in your interpretation when it suits.
The guy was educating you.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He was incorrectly trying to define apartheid and use it in a debate where it was wholly inappropriate. And I took great pleasure in explaining to that poster why saying ‘apartheid’ was hideously off the mark.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That was me you halfwit.

The very definition of blackface is this...
"make-up used by a non-black performer playing a black role"
David Walliams has already distanced himself from some of the sketches like that on the show suggesting that in later years he regretted doing them.

Everyone can make their own decision on what they’re offended by, of course. But having it removed because you are offended is something quite different

Ye I'm with Robb here. I feel like it is more justified than many of the slave trader and colonists ones actually as Churchill was fairly racist even in the context of his time. The others are products of theirs.
