Conviction(s) Armed robbery; wounding (2); wounding with intent; criminal damage; grievous bodily harm; false imprisonment (3); blackmail; threatening to kill[4]

Not really the highest category of a conviction list to really justify life in prison compared to others to be fair
Did they base a lot of those charges on death wish?

Think it's just a bit of perspective, like what has he really done? Did an armed robbery over 30 years ago where nobody got hurt, and tried to fight the system for 10 years (nothing personal was just the system), then has spent the last decade writing books and drawing and donating loads to charity and helping sick children.
Done a lot more good deeds than the average joe, he's 67 doesn't really pose any risk is clearly reformed so what is the point in keeping him in jail? Doesn't really serve any purpose, just a waste of money

No idea if it is true, but didn't he ask hostages to tickle his feet and tell him a story?

Made some good films to be fair.
Aye let's just release a psychopath who has zero respect for any authority and is known to be incredibly violent, with a short fuse.
Can't see anything going wrong there.
FFS, the in 1974 guy was given a 7yr sentence, if he'd kept his nose clean he would have been out after about 4yrs but no, he had time added to his sentence because he was a nutter.
He was released in 1987 but returned to prison the following year for planning another robbery.
Being the violent psychopath that he is, he attacked other inmates and prison guards. There is a reason he has spent time in all 3 of England's top security psychiatric prisons.
Leave him where he is, it's the best solution.

He does do some very good art though
well the fact is he's done a lot more good and good deeds than your average joe and majority of us and if he wasn't in jail likely would of been given an MBE now, writes book, draws art, donates to charity regularly and raises money for sick children.
He hasn't really had a fight or incident in a decade, so is clearly reformed. So it just begs the question what is the point in keeping him in jail, serves no benefit and is just a waste of money

So people can't change in 20 years?
His crimes don't really fit his sentence which is the crucial element, he hasn't really done anything
Maybe we can resurrect Harold shipman too so he can help out with the nhs?
“ So people can't change in 20 years?

I’ve read his biography or autobiography can’t remember which one. Years ago he got out, was out for a short while before committing a robbery (I think) because he wanted to go back in.
Who’s to say he even wants to get out?
Because that was over 30 years ago Fields and he's older and wiser now?
He is institutionalised now. If he's released and can't cope on the outside he WILL re-offend just to go back inside.
You just cannot say he is rehabilitated because he's been a good boy in an insular environment. The world is a wholly different & more violent place than it was in 1988 and he's less likely to be able to handle the changes.
Also on the flip side, he's been known as Britain's most violent prisoner for a reason and there are always idiots who will go looking for him just to see how hard he really is and it's highly likely that could end up with someone being killed.
Oh and is he wiser or has he finally learned to play the system?

Of course they deserve punishment but they don’t deserve 30 years in prison compared to most murders terrorists rapists and pedophiles getting less than or out before 30+ years so in context no the punishment doesn’t befit the crime
The 2 guys who killed the Essex boys killed 3 people between them 25 years ago and are up for release very soon as an example
So a triple murder carries under 30 years but ABH/GBH on prison guards in an attempt to fight the system and who give as good as they get deserves 30 years +
