Rob Holding

Like all our other CBs, he’s capable of putting in a good performance, even a brief period of decent form, but ultimately he will let you down when it matters most

If he steps up a few levels he can be captain and a bit of a cult hero but there's a long way to go

With his receding hairline and dominance in the air he starting to remind me of Steve Bould

Do you think this is due to.inexperience or just not good enough?

Yes

Well injuries clearly can’t have helped but there’s never been a period that he’s played for Arsenal that I’ve been convinced he could be a top CB for us. If he wasn’t English I don’t think opinions on him would be for divisive

I agree with all that and he only really looks comfortable in a 3 which is also where the Steve Bould analogy comes from

Holding is our best central defender by a mile and has massive potential to be a mainstay of the side - I don’t know why some others can’t see it.

Hard to know how far his potential was stunted by injury, but Rob Holding is hugely talented. He has the presence and personality to dominate a defence. Give him a 2014/15 Koscielny and they'd make a formidable partnership.

Miles better than Luiz

I would say that when it mattered most he gave one of his best performances.

Him and chambers are good back up options

I like Holding though feel the ACL injury has blunted his recovery pace a tad.
Will like to see him and Saliba in a partnership next season, at least in cup games.

Saliba, Mari, Luiz, Chambers, Holding, Mavropanos is a decent enough pool to choose from I guess.

Sell Sokratis and Mustafi for whatever you can get.

Spend everything on the midfield. Then look to get another top CB when Luiz facks off.

Completely agree

Spend the majority on the MF

Xhaka, Willock, Guendouzi should be bench players at bench

Send ceballos back to madrid

I don't know why we're keeping Luiz, and I think Mustafi has done well under Arteta, so unless we save a lot of money in wages by selling him, I would have kept him. Mari looked promising in the few appearances he's had, Holding clearly has potential and I think at times Chambers has looked promising (but not at RB). Sokratis is too slow for the PL, just as Mertesacker was, and at least Per offered composure on the ball.

Given how many of our CBs are young and inexperienced having five isn't a disaster - I would have ditched Luiz and sold Sokratis. Having kept Luiz I guess we have to sell Mustafi now, unless we get very good offers for one of our other CBs.

I feel sorry for our younger CBs. Arguably one of the hardest positions on the pitch to master in real time and this batch have been asked to do that with a defensively useless MF in front of them. This bunch are alot better than they get credit for. Mainly because unlike weaker back lines who came before them. They don't have the protection of an active high press killing at least half the counter attacks they face.

Past crap back lines though lumbered with no DM, had some serious opposition half ball winning to protect them. This line gets absolutely no high press protection and the immobile Xhaka to stop speeding opposition. Torreira is quality but he's one man, as handicapped by the MFs alongside of him, as the back line he busts a gut trying to protect. Also doesn't start enough.

This defence only looks the worst in 15 years because this MF is the worst in quite possibly AFC history. No high press in a side this defensively fragile...in today's game? Yeah right. With the exception of Luis, I'd like to take a look at these defenders in a team where they're protected by players whom can defend and a high press used. Maybe then we can get a FAIR guage on where they're actually at. Instead of fans writing off promising younger defenders. Because they aren't good enough to compensate for the gaping flaws in the superstar on his cake walk contract, idiot or gutless management and an owner allergic to paying for true quality in transfer windows.

Think he has potential,as has been shown by some brilliant performances, but does he have the consistency and can we rely on him weekly? I'm not too sure yet, but now is a perfect time for him to step up and prove himself, given the state of our backline.

Before his injury, I slightly favoured Chambers. Now? I don't know. I'd love Holding to succeed but I'm still not fully convinced.

Chambers was on a run when he went down. Really felt it for him. Early on he'd looked full of potential but he fizzled away seeming like he was going nowhere. Probably more due to our defensive coaching woes than his lack of talent. Few years on and same defensive woes see him back starting.

Last few months before he got injured, he looked ready to make that final step, with the right partner. Caviat being he has to not get carried away. His confidence was sky high and he'd just got a little too bold, ball at feet. Great footballer, for a CB, but only, for a CB. Started thinking he was CAM on the ball But I remember watching him thinking "Just keep it simple, stick to your job and when Holding is back, you two are set." Then couple games later. WHACK he's gone for the year!
