He wasn't intending to injure him, but it was horribly cynical. Ball had already well gone, and there was no chance of Costa doing anything from there.

Exactly! It was no accident. OK he might have fallen awkwardly but you tend to do that when you are pushed under a bus as well.

It was just a cynical act from someone who seems to have a beef about not being good enough for the club he's supposed to love.

An apology from him might be a good start.
