Pleased for him, but many, many people do similar, if not greater work and not recognised for the good they have done. I take nothing away from how he has used his standing for the good of others though.

Agree Babyen but at the end of the day it is meaningless.

Totally meaningless, but the point is he was recognized for what he did, and for that I salute him.

The honorary doctorate? I agree, but a nice gesture I suppose.

Have you got any examples, out of interest?

Yes, plenty. I have worked with, and continue to work with people in education that have made great changes to how the underprivileged access education. In fact, I worked alongside people who advised the Welsh Government to provide free meals to the poorest in our society, and got it passed, before England followed suit after Rashford’s intervention.
I take no credit for that, as I was involved in a less successful strategy.

Why do you ask, out of interest?

Because I think what Rashford has done is quite specific and was curious to find out who out there has done something similar but not received similar accolades.

The problem with you raising it when you have is that it comes across as a bit of a dig at the praise he’s getting.

There’s no reason for the people you mention to be getting a doctorate from the University of Manchester, so I think perhaps you should make your own separate campaign for those people to be celebrated.

I don’t think you have much of a point here tbh.

I respect that you have your opinion, but I have actually worked alongside people who campaigned for the exact same thing, and made it happen here in Wales. It’s as specific as what Rashford has done.
Like I said in my previous post, I’m pleased for Rashford. You can take that as genuine or not, that’s up to you. But I stand by my comment that others gave done the (exact) same thing and not been recognised.
I won’t campaign for them, as they certainly wouldn’t appreciate it .
I can read it as a dig for Rashford if you like, but it really wasn’t. More if a nod to the unsung that have done just as much. This us something I feel society severely lacks at times - the appreciation of what the Joe and Jane Bloggs do for others. Although more appreciation has been shown to the average Joe and Jane during this pandemic, and rightly so.

Why would they be recognised by the University of Manchester?

I appreciated your answer btw and accept your point about the similarities

Jesus, typos all over the place there. Excuse my fat fingers.

I’m not referring to the University of Manchester as such, more of a reference to the doctorate. Maybe I should have made that clearer, but thought other posters knew what I was alluding to.

Okay but that’s why I think your comments are misplaced.

If it were a public honour I’d agree with you.

Rashford takes immense credit for this IMO. My point would be it's rather sad that it took a footballer to make it happen when it should have been something the UK (English) Government did without pressure.

I don’t think my comments are misplaced. I readily gave Rashford kudos for what he has done, and congratulated him on his doctorate.
I only mentioned others have done the same, and not been recognised for it.

Not once did I mention a public honour either.

I can’t help but think that you believe I have an some sort of motive here, and in case you have, I haven’t. Take that as you will.

Agree to an extent. Believe me, the Welsh Government were under pressure to fo the same. It’s just that it went under the radar.

I can imagine. Not as big a news item though I suppose in Wales. I do get what you're saying with awards and recognition though but I guess it's better for them to hand them to more high profile people. Whether that's right or not is not for me to say really.

Nope, I’m taking your comments as I find them.

Why would you moan that your colleagues haven’t received an honour from a University in a different part of the UK?

It’s a bizarre complaint.

If you don’t feel that institutions in Wales have done enough to celebrate these people’s work then you go ahead and campaign about it.

It has nothing to do with Rashford and this doctorate.

Jesus Winston. I’ve not debated much with you before (if at all actually), but you come across as wanting an argument. I merely made an observation that others have done the exact same thing, and not been recognised for it. I didn’t refer to any University, only the fact that Rashford has been honoured. And that I’m actually pleased for the lad. You read that as some sort of dig towards him. I can’t change how you interpret my comment on a football forum, but neither do I care that much as I know that people will read into it what they like. Show me where I think it’s undeserved for Rashford in any of my comments.
More people should be recognised for the work they for the good of others, don’t you agree?

posted on 15/7/20

I’m not saying you think it’s undeserved.

Frankly, if you don’t understand my point from what I’ve said then there’s not really anything else I can add.

Have a nice evening.

I genuinely don’t understand your point to be honest. Maybe it’s crossed wires, or that you don’t understand my point.
No big deal. Have a good evening.
