£200m on unspecified players? Any rationale on the figure?

Just heard United are willing to sell Phil Jones to us for £200m. Do it Raul, Castor says spending £200m will win us the title

Net spend is only part of the story. Total spend, number of players bought and average cost are relevant as well. We have been poor at selling in recent years so have had less coming in from sales tha a lot of other clubs. We have spread what we have over a few players quite regulalry so havent spent a great amount on each one. As such we have not been able to spend large amount to get the players we need.
A few good ones have been splashed out on, notably Leno, Laca, Auba and Pepe. although Pepe still has to show he was worth that price tag. And there is lies a lot of the problem. We can only afford one big player a year if that and if it doesnt turn out to be a great investment we dont have funds to just replace them.
It also means that we havent been selling well as the players we do offload arent the best. We did well on Iwobi, so lets hope thats the start of something new rather than a blip.
A good CB
2 good midfielders
Auba contract
Would be great for next season.

Tbh, I'll take Holding and Chambers fit for the season (after Chambers is back at least), Saliba and Mari. An additional CB's behind the others in your iist. Getting Ceballos sorted fro next seaosn and then adding to strengthen midfield is my top priority. Midfield is the first line of defence and the first line of attack and that is where we have been losing games. Ceballos coming back has really helped but the rest that have been playing most of the season can go.

Indeed it does and highlights
1) How poor Wenger was building a squad without Dein. and,
2) How Wenger concentrated on experienced players with little resale value later in his managerial career. The only player Wenger significantly increased value on was Alexis and botched that up. Look at the players we are stuck with on huge salaries. forget fees, no one even wants to pay their wages.
Building a quality squad should always be with younger players like Wenger did with Dein in charge. We are now doing that again with Sanllehi, Edu and Arteta. Whats more its not only the Iwobi sale thats a positive sign. So is letting Ramsey go without getting stuck on a contract for £250k per week for an injury plagued player. Moving Guen on a reported deal worth £70m is pretty good too.
If saliba makes an impact next season, we potentially won’t be desperate for a CB, also have holding, chambers and Mari who are mostly unproven under Arteta, then obviously likes of Luiz, Sokratis and mustafi. Probably too many CBs to have on our books, would need to get rid of 2 before bringing 1 in. Other than the random brainfarts we’ve been making under Arteta, the defence has looked pretty organised overall. The CB area needs upgrading eventually but not sure it’s the most pressing issue at the moment. Think we need to address how we can’t control games against most opponents for more than 5/10 min spells and can’t consistently create chances, we make our defence do too much work and are often under too much pressure
There’s a lot of work to be done to get us close to the top or even top 4. As the owners will never inject a fortune it’s not going to be done in one summer. The club have to back Arteta be smart and give him what we need the best they can. But I’d say we’re looking at 4/5 years before we’d be within a shout of a proper push for the league if all went well. I’m not expecting top 4 next season but we should be properly challenging for that at least, then hopefully season after that we get CL, then push on from there

Some people are too concerned about the amount we spend.
We shouldn’t focus on big name expensive talents. We should analyse our team and see who our most pressing issues are. We then should look at the market and scout players who are suited to our system and play in a position we need. If that means choosing a lesser known player over a big named player then so be it.
Imagine if Real Madrid valued Ceballos at 40m
And we went nah we offer you 80m instead. The fact we are paying double the asking price doesn’t make him double the player in quality.
Get the players suited to our system even if it isn’t a big name or a big priced player

I was thinking the other day about how cheap we let Henry go for. If I remember rightly, Darren Bent sold for more a few days later ffs. We have long been taken for a ride when it comes to negotiating transfer fees (at least from a selling point of view). It was almost as if Wenger and co were more concerned with not contributing to the inflation of the transfer market than they were with making money for the club. Hopefully there has been a shift in mentality.

It's true we haven't maximised transfer fees when receiving them over the years but often it's public knowledge that the player wants to leave and/or they are entering the last 12-18th months of their contracts when we come to sell. I suppose there is also something to be said for not trying to screw every last penny out of buying clubs too - when it comes to future transfer dealings that should go both ways, I do feel like clubs remember if another club screws them for an absurd amount of money when it comes to doing business again.
If someone wants to take your best player though and one of the best in the World like Henry then they should be paying above market value, or 'the extra' for that though as that's totally reasonable.
16m for Henry was criminal and whoever sanctioned that sale should have been sacked on the spot.
