Nicol was right back but sometimes played left back

That’s why I’m surprised he was not mentioned in the list, he played nearly everywhere in his time at the club including midfield and I don’t think I ever saw him play a bad game. The ultimate utility player for my money.
(He’s now on the list)

Yeah I remember him playing there a lot.
Neal—-Hansen—-Lawrenson—-Nicol
It doesn’t get much better than that but there is Smith, Yeats and now Virgil who could easily be in that back four. Chris Lawler would be the other player I dithered over for RB. I think Lawro played a few games at LB also, he was blindingly quick in his prime.
Won’t be long before TAA would get a place at the rate he is improving.

To be fair you've had some great players down the years ….. for defenders not sure I've heard Hyppia mentioned?

We were garbage in defence when he arrived at the club and Sami and Henchoz pretty much transformed the team so like you say deserve a mention. I would put Sami just a shade behind the likes of Hansen and Lawro. Not far behind though mind,
I'm old enough to remember watching that Liverpool side from the 80s, though not as close as many on this thread I concede. But from memory Hansen was pure class, I don't recall thinking the same of Lawro (and I can't abide his commentary now!!). Removing the generations/side, I remember thinking how good Sami was. But I do respect the views of fans who'd have watched far closer than me.
I'm a bit too young to remember Emlyn Hughes but I've heard he was a terrific defender.
