Have they retired Trevor Francis shirt number, just out of interest?

He is the only former Birmingham player I could name.

posted on 23/7/20

maybe the club was going to go under and hes saved them :/

Don't forget Obafemi Martins! I'm sure Arsenal fans won't...

I hate the idea of "retiring" shirts, whether it's Maradona for Argentina, Le Tissier for Southampton... You want kids to aspire to be the next one. Build a statue, name a stand - anything but that. And for a teenager? Ridiculous if there is any truth in it.

They've officially confirmed it

If Greenwood gets a goal that helps us qualify for the CL this weekend, we really ought to retire his no. 26 shirt and just give him the 11 or 7. We've never had anyone decent wear those numbers or they would surely have been retired by now.

They are keeping the shirt for when he inevitably rejoins at age 44, after having a successful career.,

Their most legendary player is none other than jesse lingard, 4 goals on debut for them. Unfortunately jesse retired from professional football soon after, though he is occasionally found wandering around OT in his united kit, in the sad belief that he is still a footballer.

The shirt number doesn't change if kids want to be the next Maradona or whoever though surely? And it's a nice sign of respect I think.

Respect for what?

posted on 23/7/20

I dunno what this guy did for Birmingham since I've never heard of him, but it's a sign of respect that no other player could ever surpass what this player did for the club, and thus no other player is worthy of wearing the same shirt number for the club as the player did.

Best you shut up then.

Just to put it into perspective Birmingham managed a massive three points in their last nine games. So he clearly didn’t do much.

What? My original comment that you disagreed with wasn't specifically to do with Bellingham. You're the one at fault here.

I honestly though this was a spoof when I saw it first. Then again Antonio Valencia retired his left foot so I suppose anything is possible.

Surely they should retire Martins' shirt number after the 2011 League Cup win??

In that case I have no idea who you are on about then. When you figure that out and let me know how that fits in with your out of respect comment and Bellingham.

When you conclude it doesn’t you can shut up. Wahl.

I'm not Wahl. I was talking about the idea of retiring shirts in general, not this specific example of it. So you're still the one at fault.

Look at United and their number 7s. It's a tradition. You don't just stop after the first good one. You want others to aspire to be the next.

Depends on the player, club and history of the number. I’m not a big fan of retiring numbers but in certain context I get why clubs do it. But this one is just ridiculous.

Marc-Vivien Foe I get. That's different though. I'd never retire a number just because a player had been very good, very loyal or whatever.

I was, of course, joking. That said, I wouldn't be averse to giving him 11 next season if he had any interest in having a "first-team" number. Hopefully Sancho for 7
