Why would John Terry be the choice as defensive coach? His team had second worst defensive record in the league.

Isn't that improvement for us? Baby steps

I don’t get the hate for Alonso. Sure he isn’t amazing when defending but your attack looks so much more dangerous with him in the side.

An able keeper will hopefully help with set pieces, take the pressure of the defence by coming to claim the ball etc.

I think we need a commanding CB to organise and communicate with the rest of the defence. There seems to be a real lack of leaders amongst this group, no one really taking responsibility on the pitch.

Hopefully these additions in the defence will help somewhat. However, Lampard and his coaching staff have a lot of work to do as we've been conceding similar goals all season.

He's decent if we're looking to play 3 at the back but in a 4 he's too slow.

We need an upgrade on him and Emerson

Severely limited. More of a hindrance at times than not. Too slow for the job needed. One footed. Kills our own attacks 90% of the time.

Who is that CB though? Who is out there and avaliable? I agree we decibel need one i just can't see where that player and leader comes from.

Best way for Chelsea to improve is to, as the title of the article suggests, can Lampard.

Could do worse than reinstating Maurizio Sarri tbh.

Should be more solid when Kante returns

but we cannot realistically hope to improve much farther than 3rd of we do not find some "solidification" in the back end.

Dangerous how? If he doesn’t score a goal he rarely impacts the game positively in defence of attack.

I don't think a defensive coach would help.

Our defensive frailties are the result of an imbalanced attacking set-up. When we're organised and playing a low block we can defend relatively well as a team. What we've looked hopeless this season defending is transitions. Whether Lampard can amend this or not will ultimately decide his future at the club, but he deserves next season to find out.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't see how a defensive coach wouldn't help. Do you think these players are playing at their max potential? Do you see our set pieces as being "as good as it can get"?

The system is flawed because of the lack in ability that we had this season. Probably couldve been defensively more solid if we were less Gung ho in attack. The numbers we threw forward always meant we would leave the defense exposed. So it was a matter of choosing between sitting back defending well and likely not being able to score so ending up with boring draws and uninspiring matches OR what we saw this season. And what we saw brought us CL football for next season.

We did have many individual errors as well and that shouldn't be discounted. But in bringing in someone to shore up set pieces, which is just pathetic and seemingly worse each game, we could figure out who the weak link in defense really is. We do not look organized. We don't seem to have a clue. That shouldn't take more than an entire season to figure out.

Next season the pressure will be on. With each signing the expectations will rise. Lampard needs to show us he has learned from this season.

Very true. Once we get into the final 3rd we lose all ability for creative thought and become very static. Sideways, backwards, sideways, hold onto it allowing defenders to compose themselves, hopeless cross, nobody near it, give up cheap goal on the counter.

Who thinks this playing out from the back at all cost will bring success. we keep playing our defenders into costly mistakes in dangerous areas. sometimes a boot into touch should be preferred. I would love to see us attempt to bring bak Steve Clarke to fix our defence, it was him not JT behind our defensive stability for years.

Another good point. Attempting to play it out every single time drives me crazy. We don't have the players for that obviously.

The counter argument though is that we have the worst headerers ever in the team and basically only Giroud and Tammy can bring it down. Tammy barely. So we entirely just give up possession every time we lump it up. Albeit in a less dangerous poison.

Vava,
A good point about Steve Clarke,he would make a difference I'm sure.Something drastic has to be done ,I don't know if my heart could take another season of defending like we've just had !
