All you really need from a goal keeper is competence and Marshall ticks that box.

Remember Colin Boulton breaking in to the team when Reg Matthews was faltering. He was hopeless. Three years later he was a far better keeper and our most successful ever in terms of league position, so don't write Roos off yet.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Colin Boulton replaced Les Green in the first team Spart

--------------------------------------------------------------

That was his second spell as first team goal keeper Scouse. In 1968 when you were probably brighter than you are now, he replaced Reg Matthews and wasn't very good. Now don't try and correct your elders and betters. The following season Les Green was signed.

Should say that Boulton was so bad Reg came back. Reg let the ball through his legs on occasions but saved loads of penalties.

"To sign tomorrow, 2 year deal. 35 years old.

Good signing for me. Quality experienced keeper. Plan maybe for Ravas to be his apprentice and take over in a couple of years unless it is felt Roos still has potential to improve. "
***********************************************************
Yep, I'm still hopeful Roos / Ravas will come good so I view this as a good signing. As people have said 35 isn't old for a keeper - and a 2 year contract is about right. I've seen it said that if we were going for an older Keeper we may as well have kept Carson - but no doubt finance had a lot to do with it. Anyway, another box ticked....

Can Marshall play out from the back? I assume he must be able too otherwise why buy him when we have Carson on the books.
As other have said it appears we can’t afford Carson.

I said it when he was bombed out of the side that I reckon he had an appearance based extension clause that was soon to be activated. If we are willing to sign a 35 year old on a 2 year deal then Roos’ days must be numbered.

Thommo, as I pointed out about Colin Boulton, goal keepers can improve in a couple of years. Roos is an excellent shot stopper but fails on the basics so should be able to be coached. If not we have Ravas who is promising. With a goal keeper always on the bench though many young keepers don't get the match time required to improve.

posted on 19/8/20

To become a competent keeper Roos needs to be commanding in the air which is his failing. He is tall so there is no physical reason why he shouldn't be able to do this. Either he simply doesn't have it in him or he hasn't yet learned how to. Players don't improve much by sitting on the bench so maybe a half-season loan with a recall clause might be the thing, provided there is a club that would make him first choice. Probably a lower level might be better for him as you don't get too many passing teams in Leagues 1 and 2 and more aerial bombardments. If he can't cut it lower down then he needs letting go.

I think Roos lacks the mental fortitude required.
He has the ability to catch a cross but gets nervous under pressure.
Rugby fullbacks need this toughness to catch an up and under. Some people are just braver that others. It can't be taught. I'm not saying Roos is not brave he's probably just like to rest of us but it takes a certain mental strength to put yourself in harms way.

It’s basic goalkeeping, generally they are tall, you have the advantage of using your hands and the ref tends to protect you also. If you aren’t competent at catching a ball then maybe goalkeeping isn’t the profession for you.

Spart I don't think Boulton was as bad as you are saying, I thought he did well when Matthews was "injured" and was surprised when Reg came back in. I used to watch the reserves and thought Boulton should have been in earlier, Reg was well past it by then.
and I remember Reg letting a soft shot through his legs, only for the ref to disallow the goal. Reg turned to the Normanton end and winked.

Favourite reserve match was when Peter Daniel hit Joe Jordan hard and was out injured of the dirty team for ages.

I don't think you have much mental capacity to process information - so I'll help.

You put the original article 'The gift that keeps on giving' on both the Florest and Derby boards. Basically it was an article that was shrieking in glee at our inability to gain a play-off place. With me so far?

Florest then set a new low for implosion and bottling it on the final day of the season which then impelled me write a parody article of yours 'The gift that keeps on giving' on both Derby and Florest boards. OK, get it?

You then sought to get my parody article removed form the Florest board. It was. With me?

I know thinking is not your strong point - actually it's making a complete embarrassing fool which is your forte - you don't feel any sense of self-deprecation or irony, so really you need to start prepping for year 11 and the stuff you missed during lock-down

Hope this helps?
