Aurier made 137 crosses last season about hit the target.
Doherty offers a lot more going forward in my opinion. Great in the air too. Defensively it remains to be seen if he is an improvement, just not making the brain farts and having some sense of defensive positioning would be a big improvement though
Good is definitely the word to describe him
A definite upgrade on aurier
"Aurier defo has a howler in him but equally I'm not sure Doherty offers as much going forward as Aurier. Yes, he's scored a few goals but that's down to the Wolves system more than it is the player himself. He won't get that freedom under Jose."
Don't agree with any of this
Other than aurier having a howler in him
I remember a Wolves fan insisting to me once that he's a wing back rather than a full back, that he's a very effective wing back but a liability at full back. So maybe it depends how Mourinho intends to use him.

A couple weren’t even bad as he was coming onto the pass and then opened his body up on the turn
He's looked good at international level when I've seen him play for Ireland, he's not got many caps so far cause Seamus Coleman was ahead of him but expect him to be the starting right back for us under the new manager, personally delighted he's signing for spurs.

You're right! That barnet is really hard to look at but he seems to know his stuff. Doesn't make me change my mind on it being a bit of an unambitious purchase.
We're slowly drifting back into a team capable of hoping for Europe rather than a quality team demanding to sit at the top table. If Doherty were 19-20 and not the finished article like a Dele Alli when we first got him then you'd say it's a steal. As it is, it's very underwhelming.

It’s definitely not underwhelming it’s a solid if not unspectacular signing similar to Højbjerg.
A upgrade in every way on our current options but with his age there needs to be a succession plan in place.
Problem is right now there isn’t many decent RBs around.
I think people need to realise right now we are going for ready to go solid signings rather then what we went for last season which was full of potential signings.
Mourinho is trying to get a balanced squad to go out and win something within the next 2 years.

I think there will be soon. I think Alphonso Davies will be the blueprint for wingbacks soon. If you can train them in the art of defending well enough, traditional wingers will become wing backs. He didn't pull up any trees as a winger. Flick moved him to wing back and suddenly he's the best one in the world.

We just can't do that if we want to dine at the top table. We don't have the money. We have to find them before they become out of our price range, otherwise with mediocre money you buy mediocre players. Simple as that. We couldn't afford any player of equivalent cash value based on the talents of Kane, Son, Alli, Eriksen, Toby, Lloris, Walker etc. All of these players joined us before the world really knew how good they were.

What Davies is doing at Bayern is not a new thing. We had similar with walker & Rose.
Madrid had it with Marcelo
Liverpool with TAA
we have the better Davies anyway
I agree exactly with OP’s analysis. Especially in a back hour he’s not really an upgrade on your full backs
His main strength is attacking the box, plus he's good in the air. Jose will deffo instruct Lloris to hit him on goal kicks
He's proven himself as one of the best attacking wing backs in the PL, but in a back 4 he's unproven still. I'd be interested to see him and Sessegnon as wing backs in a back 3
His actual all round game in terms of passing, dribbling etc is probably fairly average, or at least not exceptional
Defensively again I'm not sure but I don't remember him making any howlers
It's a very random but interesting signing. Could easily go either way in terms of success or failure tbh
if you dont think he's an upgrade on Aurier you dont watch spurs

That's not a new thing atall, almost every single explosive attacking fullback is because they underwhelmed further up the pitch.
Doherty reminds me of Alonso. Occasional ability to get into good positions for goals/assists and so can get into these positions more for as a wingback. Passed this what is there? Slow/immobile, can’t carry ball, doesn’t have good vision/creative passing, not stand out defensively. Doherty lacks Alonso’s good shooting technique
Having watched him play about half of his 250 odd games he's developed from a good solidly defensive right back to an exceptional attacking right wing back, via a strange spell when Paul Lambert thought he was a left back. (Whilst he had Coady playing RB incidentally).
Over the last three seasons under Nuno he's improved exponentially. He's definitely benefited from having better players around him, he's been fitter too, doesn't get injured and his touch is very good. He gets in the right positions out wide, not blisteringly fast but finds space well. He's added goals to his game too over the last two seasons.
Defensively he's solid, rarely gets caught out of position or on the wrong side. We'll be sad to see him go. A small vocal group of Wolves fans knock him purely because he was signed by Mick McCarthy, ergo he's a talent-less clogger, which is reactionary nonsense.
