I'd put Terry in the same group asTony Adams - 50% skill, 50% raw desire.

I never really liked Terry.

One of those players where I think my radar must be off because I always thought he was overrated and needed a quality reader of the game next to him, but tend to doubt myself on that now.

He was a bit last ditch but I'd like him on my team tbh.

I mean he is still the best defender in the league whatever stats you point out to make him look poor. He’s a huge reason why Liverpool have won the CL and PL in the past 2 seasons.

posted on 14/9/20

A bit of tripe there OP, if you watch him you know he's a bloody good player. Stats don't tell you even half the story.
Still, he's a Liverpool player so carry on.

Immense player.

It’s pretty uncontroversial I think to state that he’s the primary reason why Liverpool have the best defensive unit in the country.

One of the best attacks in PL history, and one of the best back fives for me. If they had a midfield, they’d be a frightening proposition.

This article is a massive fallacy, he's made mistakes, therefor he is sheite.

He's probably prevented more going in than everyone else as well. He's coaching the defence during matches. He's a leader on the pitch. His off ball runs probably prevented thousands of passes.

etc etc etc.

OP seems to lack some footballing insights.

Was definitely not a bit last ditch although he could do it with blocks etc but most consider him the best reader of the game the pl had.

VVD is one of the best CBs in the world at the minute, not as good as Rio, Vidic, Terry, Kompany, Adams, Stam, Campbell though

I sometimes wonder if people actually watch football. Vidic better than VVD? VVD has everything, pace, aerial ability, composure, technical ability.

There are maybe 1 or 2 defenders in premier league history you could argue were better defenders.

Fine, he's on par with Vidic, though people's opinion of Vidic seem to stem from 1 or 2 bad games against Liverpool, when otherwise he was one of the most consistent defenders in the league at his peak. But if you offered me any of the defenders listed at their peak VVD would not be in the top 4 on my list. Sorry

Don't know how people slate Terry for not having pace and also being a last ditch defender, the two aren't exactly compatible traits. As you say he made a lot of blocks and that was due to his positioning and reading of the game.

I think when you look at the individuals and their skills sets it's difficult not to put VVD at the top. For me he is the best in that respect but when we determine overall best, many people are going to put longevity close to the top of their personal criteria and VVD doesn't have that compared to these guys.

VVD has played more PL games for Liverpool than Stam did for United however. As I said before for me VVD is the best in the PL era, in terms of his skill set and the level he's at but if longevity is high up your criteria then it has to be Terry, with Vidic not far behind.

There are different types of centre backs based on their skill sets and them making the most of them, as there are different types of strikers, for example. You could compare Terry to a striker who scores a load of goals and maybe VVD to a striker who scores less goals but provides a lot of assists and is more involved in the team play. It doesn't necessarily mean one is better than the other, they just are different players.

VVD best ever PL defender.

TAA best ever PL right back.

Alisson best ever PL keeper.

Gerrard 3rd best player this century behind Messi and Suarez.

I never said Alisson was the best ever PL keeper. That's always been Schmeichel for me.

I also never said Suarez is in the top three this century. The top two are clearly set in stone. The third is up for debate. My personal choice is Gerrard. So what? Is that laughable but also valid?

Also in regards to TAA, I don't think there have been any world class right backs to play in the PL era but TAA is as close to one as there has been. Although another few years, I don't think this will be in doubt, if he continues to hit the levels he's been hitting and still only twenty-one too, with scope for improvement.
