We’ll make it back in shirt sales
It’s a slap in the face signing Cavani. Joke signing. Can’t believe for a moment Ole wanted this to happen.
Didn't you always champion us signing Cavani? Even as recently as last summer?
I may be wrong here, but it rings a bell.
The jury is out for me on this signing... He has been a top quality striker for many years and relies on smart positioning and finish rather than speed, so should have couple of years left in him... Of course, he will want big wages and the timing does seem desperate. But if it works, it works.. if it doesn't.. it's only a two year deal.
Counter argument is that if it does work then it's only a season or 2 worth you'll be getting. Hardly building for the future is it?
It just seems like a "ensure we get CL football next season" signing rather than a "compete for the league" signing.

I have loved Cavani for ages. And under a manager who will set up to get the best out of him he would (once upon a time) be fairly formidable. But he’s past his best, doesn’t fit into our style at all, will want to play more than Ighalo likely would and clearly isn’t Ole’s choice.
He’s here for a final payday, and the club have brought him in as Ed thinks because he’s a big name he’s going to silence the fans growing anger of another inept summer.
Would he be a bad signing if he was part of 5/6 other, more suitable signings? Probably not. But as it stands it’s like going to the shops to buy food for a hungry family and coming back with just a packet of bourbon creams.

I imagine we could offer him another year?! i think that sometimes happens.
Considering the age of our current strike force, I am not sure we need to be overly planning for the future. Everyone is still hung up about Sanchez and forget (or ignore) the impact of Zlatan. These things are a gamble, but can sometimes galvanise the team.
If morrissey was to give his thoughts on this signing I’m sure his last words would be “Hang the DJ”
I should think Ole will be fed up with this.
He has stated the type of player he wants, and Cavani doesn't fit

It’s anything but an ensure CL signing. He’s injury prone. He doesn’t suit the style (might as well have kept Lukaku) and he isn’t a CB.
Oh, and Ed should pay the agent out of his own pocket
and clearly isn’t Ole’s choice.
--------------
this is just pure speculation though. "oh, but Ole plays a different way"... Maybe Ole doesn't want to only play one way? (well, he's already shown that in a 3-5-2 successes).
If we are all about speculation... We can also speculate that Ole has seen we are weak in the air, lack certain movement from Martial (especially at the front post) and need a better back up than Ighalo.
His agent will be dancing around the kitchen to this.

The Zlatan signing was clearly different. He was coming off a brilliant year in France. 38 goals. And was someone who knew and was loved by Jose and was put in from the start and the team was built to get the best out of him.
Under Ole we’re a fast, counter attacking side - and the Cavani of now (even without his numerous injuries) isn’t going to fit in to that. Will be just be happy to sit on the bench and play league cup games and against the Istanbul’s of this world? Doubtful.
At £240k a week after tax it’s clear he isn’t coming for the money

Cavani is not a bad signing.
Ighalo leaves in January and we're low on depth options. We would have had to buy someone in January when the players available are even worse.

I think people still underestimate just how congested this season is. Seriously, have a quick look at our schedule over the next 3 months. If he stays fit he'll get big games without being 1st choice. I would actually argue that 4 good options for those front 3 positions isn't enough.

True. It's why I always found it strange when people claimed that signing Sancho would stunt Greenwood's development. The most harmful thing imaginable to Greenwood's development is being selected for every game at 18 years old
Given the direct quotes from the agent, it is very difficult to avoid agreeing with robb on this:
He’s here for a final payday, and the club have brought him in as Ed thinks because he’s a big name he’s going to silence the fans growing anger of another inept summer.
Maybe he succeeds, maybe he flops, but it doesn't scream shrewd. Also notable that zlatan and sanchez were brought in as first choice players, i assume cavani is only here as back-up to martial? sitting on our bench may be a mental test for the guy, who knows.
and yeah, i think the slightly smug claims of "we've changed our transfer approach...ole only wants players who are committed to the club etc" can probably end now.

All depends on if Cavani is happy being a plan b. Maybe he will just sit on the bench and collect his money and just see out the next 2 years before going to Qatar or the US.
But a guy like him imo will want to be starting most weeks.
