Its the formation that kills us. We already lack creativity but adding a 343 against a team parking the bus....it simply won't work. We looked to switch to a 433 type of formation with Saka, Auba and Pepe and Willian went more central. Suddenly came alive.

I really hope Arteta learns from this...and plans accordingly when we play teams who are going to sit back nd give us the ball.

We would have drawn or lost that game under Emery so this is progress as far as I'm concerned. Can't be unhappy with 9/12 points from our first 4 games ahead of the international break.

hopefully not.

J99, no game in this league is easy and there'll be fluctuating fitness levels between teams, but our lack of chance creation and shots on goal is a justified concern.

I'm happy we won, and to be fair, we've had a good start to the season in all competitions. But I don't think these results are sustainable if we don't get players that can make a difference in the final third.

Pepe goal was very Salah like

We were the most efficient team in the league in attack last season with the goals we scored from so few chances created. Seems it's a recurrent theme this season. Just 6 attempts (on and off target combined) all match. We're more solid in defense under Arteta, but we really need some spark in attack.

We played well for four whole minutes.Let’s not get carried away. We played dire football for 90 mins against the team 2nd from bottom. We were hanging on for dear life. We need new players (which we won’t get) and we need to play Ozil for parts of some games .

Samir, I understand what you are saying. But playing less midfield players does not work.

This is a one striker league. Even in the days of Denis and Henry, Denis used to drop deeper into midfield and both Pires/Freddie compacted the midfield using the full backs for width.

The extra midfield player opened the game up. We are able to break Sheff Utd press because of Willian coming into the middle and the get the ball forward quicker. Similarly defensively Elneny/Ceb worked really well together. They stayed close to each other and Willian/Saka both compacted the midfield.

In fact we only lost that when Xhaka came on and started to do things individually. That left passing angles for Sheff Utd to play through midfield. We changed the formation to 3-4-3 to stop that from happening. But really only needed to change the personnel.

We need to buy midfielders. No one on here has ever disputed that.

I'm saying I can understand why people are complaining despite the victory because in the long-run, it's unlikely that our current group of players will get us where we need to be.

OK my fault m8. I assumed it was from my theme in this thread. I have been repeating it and soon as Arteta made the change the game opened up. Our bad play was because of 3-4-3. As soon as we went 4-2-3-1 we opened them up and they couldn't press us either. To be honest even if we buy Aouar it won't make the difference without the change of formation.
