The thing that is worrying me is the general lack of organisation at the back, not necessarily personnel. Our same backline looked much better last season, not saying it was great by any means.
That can be helped by dropping Pogba for someone with some defensive nous to provide some protection. The midfield is getting bypassed to easy at the moment.
Yep, good article. We need to give the new players a chance, and the coaching staff a chance with the new players
I’d just question your comment about Telles and Rashford.
Firstly, Telles gives the ball away *a lot*. Marauding runs and long range cannonballs you’re going to get. Nice intricate passing moves around the edge of the box, well, we’ll see but I wouldn’t hold my breath.
Secondly, Rashford is going to have to do a whole lot more defensively if Telles is left to play his natural game from LB. Or Matic is going to have even more work to do.

Agreed. Jose schooled us tactically in Sunday by using Lamela to draw Shaw inside and give Aurier the freedom of our left side and destroy us. If Telles is as attacking as thought, that may well push their right back up the pitch but either way, Rash needs to offer far more defensively.

wouldnt shock me to see us go with 3 at the back to make things more secure
I kind of wish managers couldn't change other than in transfer windows too, so we could just draw a line under it all and they have a very specific timeline until a replacement could be brought in.
It maybe an expensive lesson but even if cavani plays 2 games at his ability and spends the rest of the year on the treatment table it will show us that we always needed a quality striker

Would have some decent options on the bench with Pogba, Greenwood, Cavani.
Looks like lots of crystal balls have been sold on Amazon.

He won’t show anything. He played in relatively poor leagues. He’s old and not match sharp. He won’t do anything. If he scores 5 goals I’ll be shocked. At best he will score 3 goals in probably 15 appearances
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I have worries over his match fitness etc too. But I disagree with you.
What we have lacked for a long time is forwards who move, create space and don't all play similarly, as in ball to feet and run.
Ighalo as poor as he may have been showed elements of that in his few appearances. But he wasn't good enough.
Cavani will show us we need a quality forward and what a difference it will make.

Toplad - didn’t we hear this about Zlatan etc that he will teach our players this and that. And Zlatan is a much better player than cavani. Toplad trust me in 2/3 years time we will he talkinn about the next has been helping our new young players as it’s a circle of insanity at United
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Zlatan brought a lot of experience and added a lot in the dressing room. Everyone respected him, you could see it and the players always mentioned it and seemed to love him. Cavani will have a similar effect.

I thought he was better attacking wise and his link up play would be better but obviously not. Shaw and Rashford had built up a good relationship ok the left but I’m hoping Telles may take it to another level
Good article. I for one need to do some research on the signings but there are a lot of young and hopefully hungry players including Traore in January.
Fair comments in the OP. The only thing I would suggest is to not read too much in the statistic of how god our defence was last year.
Watching our defence last year should have told all of us how poor it really was which is so evident right now.
There was never a time last season where I felt we didn’t look like conceding a goal. Even in games we comfortably won.

Not too dissimilar to Van Gaal's second season in that respect. De Gea was brilliant then and I think we probably bored some opponents into attacking lethargy, but defensively we weren't as strong as the GA column suggested.

Yeah, he has attacking potency. But it’s more of the raw pace and power side than it is about interplay.
Indeed Clockwork.
We all use statistics to back up our arguments when it suits us. I am guilty of it myself.
Bit I am always aware statistics don’t depict the whole story.
And last years defence stats were very misleading. I often pointed out AWB’s lack of positional awareness. Every man and his dog could see how poor at the back Lindelof is and we have all known for years that DDG has a weak command of his box.

_____________
At least Maguire and Shaw are dependable
Signing Cavani doesn’t make any sense, we got rid of Lukaku who’s a similar player only to sign someone who’s 5 years older and more injury prone probably on a higher salary. So much more this new and improved transfer strategy.
