As we all know when you deep Kepa’s stats it is really terrible reading. Under Lampard we as far as I know we concede more shots on target than other teams.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
I thoiught the stats were that we have conceded the least shots after Man City....see link
https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/oct/19/chelseas-defence-raises-doubts-over-lampard-tactics-ahead-of-sevilla-game
Anyway, without reading any of the comments above i think there have been a multitude of factors at play..
We have had to play some rubbish defenders in AC, Alonso and Emerson.
CBss that we thought were ok like Rudiger have been dire the last 12 months meaning Zouma, who is far from perfect has been our best CB.
and of course Kepa, who is simply the worst keeper we have had for decades.
Add to this cocktail a manager who is in the process of working out the right balance for the team and trying to get 6 new players up to speed and integrated into the PL and life in a new country and volia...you have Chelsea FC.
But Mendy, Chilwell and Silva have already made a huge positive impact.
James is improving week by week.
Frank it seems and i hope is now much closer to finding a team balance with 4 3 3 .
There is a lot to feel positive about and my only worry right now is sick note Pulisic
But since August 2019 City have faced 320 shots (including blocks) compared to Chelsea’s 379 and Liverpool’s 386, indicating that coaching a team to function as a unit off the ball might not be beyond Lampard.
Fair enough. I think I read somewhere we let more goals in on average (vs other teams) under Lampard. By eye test it does seem we concede more shots in dangerous areas than under Sarri.

That's a pretty fair assesment of it Biggish!
Have to start calling Pulisic; Christian Anderton!
for many years we have had good ball playing defenders and good keepers, as far back as Cudicini theyve been very good. Even then we never had this nonsense of trying to messi every ball out of defence it was into touch or punt upfield. Yes you can lose the posession that way but when you lose it its as a throw in or pick up on the halfway line. Now we have no real ball playing defenders and try to pass our way out of trouble this results in many things but the main problem is that it allowas opponents to pressure us right at our defensive line or at best our midfield. We have conceded so many weak goals by mistakes in this area. its got worse since the goal kick rule has changed, the opponents attack are parked right at yhe edge of our box with only a couple of defenders between them and the goal.
Before this happened keepers normally punted the ball upfield and the oppos attack was 40 meteres away from our goal.
When we bought Kepa he was know for his ballplaying skills and for a keeper he was a good passer of the ball actually better than our defenders are. that why in his first season he was more reliable because our defence was further upfield.
Sarriball B/S ruined Kepa and the new goalkick rule. Kepa i think would be a great keeper for a team like westham whos defender play the ball out rather than try tou outpass attackers(not pretty) but saves their keepers reputations-see fabianski now as opposed to when he was at Arsenal.

Yeah bang on
Obviously Kepa has a lot to answer for - but it wasn’t all his fault, and our good form recently isn’t all Mendy’s fault (as good as he has been). For instance, yesterday Mendy kept a clean sheet, but Burnley didn’t have one shot on target! That doesn’t tell the whole story - that chance at the beginning of the game, when Wood got the other side of a discombobulated Zouma - but failed to hit the target. But part of the reason for that, was the HUGE figure of Mendy rushing out to block, which must have been terrifying even to someone as big as Wood. Had Kepa been playing, I suspect that would have been a goal.
But generally, you have to say our defence is totally different now, being marshaled by Silva with both strength and speed on the flanks. So it’s not an entirely fair comparison.

Lampard didn’t help, but Kepa was the worst keeper in premier league history. That’s gonna be massively damaging to your goals against tally. Teams just knew if they got a shot on target their a very good chance it goes in as he couldn’t save simple shots.

Hate to agree with Donny, but statistics do suggest Kepa is the worst keeper in PL history.
What I do have an issue with is his comment that “Lampard didn’t help”, which is vague and misleading at best. Lampard was stuck with the players he had for the first year, so there wasn’t much he could do about Alonso, Rudiger, Christensen, Zouma, Kepa. They were all liable to make mistakes. There was an immediate improvement as soon as Chilwell, Silva and Mendy arrived.
