Woodgate to Real

Brutal debut. Brutal ending🤮
Idk, I feel like a lot of examples here are players moving from relatively small clubs to big clubs and just not hacking at that level, which is a little different to what I had in mind which is players at already big clubs who are clearly already excellent players who thought that a move to another big club would be a step forwards but ended up worse off.
I'd love to have been able to have listed Courtois as well, but I've heard he's doing well at Real now actually. Shame, I still hate the fact that Chelsea got rid of Cech because they thought Courtois would be a long term goalkeeper for Chelsea. In retrospect we should have sold Courtois instead of recalling with him and just kept Cech.
What about Juan Mata, or did he not want to leave?
Alex Hleb. Seriously good player to watch, but fecked off to rot at Barca.
I wouldn't say Mata. I don't think he sought out United as a step up, I think he thought he deserved better than being a rotation player at Chelsea and joined United for that reason.
The funny thing is, after a few months he was basically relegated to being a rotation player at United and that hasn't changed to this day. And yet now he seems to be perfectly satisfied with that role . May as well have stayed at Chelsea dude. Would have won a couple of league titles along the way.

That’s not true. He was a regular under Moyes, Van Gaal and even Mourinho to begin with.
He wasn't a regular under Van Gaal.
Yes he was. In Van Gaal’s two years only De Gea started more matches than Mata.

Very much so.
However he didn't want to leave United so he probably knew that the grass wouldn't be greener

Madrid also had Gutti who is probably one of the most under rated midfielders from that period. Beckham was always going to find it hard trying to get games in CM.

He's scored in big games for us and helped us to win our the FA Cup in 2016 to be fair to him.
